FX-5200 = Junk......Aviod at all costs
There's a good reason why those cards are a dime a dozen now. :)

explain...it is 256bit for 99 bucks...has to be better than mx440...
the 5200 is a bit slower than the GF4 TI cards that it was ment to replace...it's that sad. You'll be far better off hunting around for a Ti-4200 that can be overclocked to 300/600 for only a bit more cash and you have a bigger performance gain for your hard earned cash to boot.

if it was the ultra version, that would be good...either way, it's better than the MX440. BTW, there's a ATI 9200 256 available at MWAVE....and i gotta an FX5200...it works for me.
Define works. If by that you mean it can display the desktop then ok.
Maybe he wants more than something that just "works"
Maybe you guys don't realize that some people are content with cards that aren't as fast as a 9700pro... my GF2 was fine for quite a while and it could play any game out there. Advising is one thing, but being rude is another.
That being said, the FX5200 isn't worth it. 256mb is useless now, and probably will for quite a while, especially since the 5200 can't really do high resolutions and FSAA which is where more RAM comes in useful.
Save your money and get a ti4200 for $75. It'll blow the FX away.

so i should replace my mx440 with the ti4200....i want 128bit just so i feel big...big numbers make me feel better lol....and idk if the ti4200 is 128bit...if so i might get it...if not then what is a card in the 100- price range

i play tribes2 and quake3 at 1024x768 w/out lock ups or anything like that...that's all i need. i don't know what afisoldier's requirements are but you gotta realize who this card was made for...the non-hardcore, budget gamers.

A Ti4200 would be an upgrade for your GF4 MX440... but really not a huge one. I'd either wait a while and choose an upgrade in that price range, or move up a level in terms of money so that you can get a worthwhile upgrade.

Maybe he would like to play games made in this century ?
Even a geforce 2 MX will run Quake 3 just fine but give me a break that game is a dinosaur, why buy a card thats already unable to play games made today without turning down the graphics settings so it will run smooth ?
Cold hard fact is that the 5200 is a failure, sure the 5200 supports DX9 and alot of the features the nicer cards have but it lacks the horsepower to actually use them.
While the TI4200/radoen 8500 lack DX9 support they will both run circles around the 5200 and can be had for the same price or lower if you do some shopping.
Even the 5200 ultra version is no match for a Ti4200/radeon 8500 and the 5200 ultra costs alot more then either of those.

As far as a new card goes here are a few options. My prices may not be exact but will atleast give you an idea.
Ti4200 = $90-$130. no DX9 but is still a very capable card. 2 times as fast as a 5200. Might consider a Ti4400 but I am not seeing any in your price range.
Radeon 8500/9100 = $72-$110. no DX9 but almost as fast as the Ti4200 and again about twice as fast as a 5200.
Radeon 9500 non pro = $140ish. supports DX9, not alot faster then a ti4200 in terms of raw horsepower but with all the goodies turned on the ti4200 falls way behind. also have a chance to softmod to a radeon 9700.
Radeon 9600 pro = $150ish Supports DX9, similar performance to the 9500 but the core is made with the .13 process so it tends to be a good overclocker, no chance to softmod but overall a good card for the money.
After that the price goes above your $175 budget so Ill leave it at that.

If you want an oppinion from a guy that has a 4200, then that would be me :]
I bought my MSI 4200 *250/512* 128 mb 8x agp from newegg and it works soooo much better than my old mx 440. I am so happy with it, plus I don't want/need a $300 card...yet. If I were you I would go for the 9500 non pro or the ti 4400.
