I assume you have a Slot A cpu, if so you need a Gold Finger Device <GFD>. Do a websearch for gold finger device and im sure you'll find em.

Well, actually there is no multiplyer lock on K7 CPU's. All you have to do to change it is crack the cover off and add a GFD onto it. Here are some links on how-to overclocking with athlon classics. With the GFD all you have to do is basic OC'ing. If you have questions, let us know! Succesfull OC'ing,

a gold finger device works on some chips, i know that people were haveing problems with the athlon slot a 700. thye could only get them up to like 800 no matter what they did.

that seems wierd as i have a slot a 750 athlon ,opened the case and added a gfd (freespeed pro) had no problems at all

The 700 Athlons probably have a 1/2 cache divider, while the 750s may have had a 1/3 divider. The cache is what held most classic Athlons back. You can rewrite the cache divisor, I believe, with some program. Never had to do it myself though, so I have no idea.

As Nagorak said, 700 have a 1/2 cache multiplyer, and 750 steps to 2/5. About the proc. specs, here they are, including the L2 cache speed and setting:
http://www.geek.com/procspec/amd/k7.htm
People running into problems with for instance their 700@800, you can use mathlon to configure L2 cache before Windows start, if you have a K7V mobo go to www.K7V.com and get a bios with L2 set to desired speed. Mathlon uses an start-up floppy to set your L2, simple: http://www.nexus.hu/plusabit/english/index.html
Enjoy the possiblities of good old athlon classics, the best in my opinion!

I believe--and I could be mistaken--that the 750 was the first Athlon to use a .18micron architecture...everything before and including some 750 was a .25micron. That's why "older" Athlon classics had trouble reaching above 800MHz...

All 800 and above classics were made with .18, so most will hit about 1GHz,

hope it helped...

I have a classic 700a, slot A, non T-bird chip overclocked to 1120mhz on a K7V mobo in jumperfree mode using a northwind GFD and runs like a Rolex Watch.
