View Full Version : Strange beeping sound

Ok, so on this new computer I'm building, I have everything installed on it to make it work except a HDD. I had an old 7.85GB HDD laying around, so I put it in, installed XP, AOL, AIM, and the modem driver. That's all I put on it. When I talk to people on AIM, every time I send or receive an instant message, something inside the computer makes a beeping sound. I think it's the modem but I'm not sure (the modem is the only thing that makes sense to me). It also makes the beeping sounds at other times, but the only specific pattern that I can make of it is when sending or receiving instant messages. The other times, the sound just seems to be random. Can anyone tell me what is causing this?
Edit: When I hit 'Submit New Thread,' it made the sound again. Just thought I'd add that.

That's probably just your PC-Speaker. Check your volume control (usually on the task bar) for a "PC-Speaker" volume. If you mute that, it should go away.
It would be trying to play the little click sounds when you click on a link in IE, or any noises made by the IM program.

This just in: I'm now thinking that it's not the modem. I was typing something in Notepad a few minutes ago, and when I clicked 'Save,' it made the same sound. So I think it's the HDD now. But I've been on for about 10 minutes now, before typing this message and it hasn't been doing it. I've even been chatting on AIM. But I did restart my computer so I could install a new mouse and keyboard, so maybe all it needed was a reboot. I think it's fixed. Thanks for the help though.
if you do not have a Soundcard installed the computer uses the PC speaker, once you install a soundcard the pc speaker will stop doing that.
However if its really annoying unplug it.
