I just changed mt system to a Athlon 650 and got a gigabyte ga-7Ixe4 with a globalwin fop38 cooler I oced it to 748 115 fsb. My questiopn is what is anyone opinion on this setup how safe is 115 for pci devices also my tep ranges from 49 - 53 c is that too hot

p.s this is my first AMD overclock

115 for PCi should be fine but it depends entirely on how good your PCI devices are, usually its just luck. As for the temperatures, thats getting a little on the hot side... I'd be uncomforatable with that. The ideal range would be near 35 celcius.

Well I wish I could get it to 35 deg c it runs form a cold boot (computer was off for 3 hours ) 45deg c

Don't worry too much m8 - I have the same mobo and it runs at pretty much the same temp (although I do have a T-bird 800).

It will reach 50C but I've never seen it go higher :)

I blame my heatskink/fan - It's a Coolermaster one but it's recommended for 800Mhz T-birds maximum.

If I get a better fan/heatsink I assume the temp will go down (like - durrr).
Which one do people here reckon I should get for this system - I don't have huge mounts of cash and I only see me taking my T-Bird from 800 to 900 max (I don't have the money to replace charred processors ;) )
I have some Arctic Silver coming in the post too - would it help if I put this on - ATM there is nothing between my Heatsink and cpu afaik (a m8 did the 'tricky' bit when I built my PC - it's the only bit I didn't do).

BTW - my current CPU fan speed is 4963rpm
specs r:
Athlon T-Bird 800 cpu
Gigabyte 7IEX4 mainboard
GeForce 32MB SDR vga card
IBM 30GB HDD
Seagate HDD 6GB (could the xtra HDD be causing my heat probs?)
Yamaha Waveforce Soundcard
Crap 50X CD-Rom which I hate (it sounds like an aircraft carrier when it spins and then barks like a dog when it seeks!)
3Com Internal PCI modem.

I personally find that Gigabyte boards are rubbish.

They tend to break down a lot and performance wise they are outmatched by the likes of Asus and Abit.

The FOP38 is a nice cooler but it is no good unless you have sufficent case ventilation. Have you got any airflow to cool the system temp down?

Might want to invest in a few 80mm fans for the front and back of the case, maybe a card cooler and a system exhaust blower.

Hope this helps.

I've found the borad to be really good actually - very stable - not one BSOD in the three months since I built the system.

I've had about three or four lockups but I blame the heat of the processor - I can't see how this could be the fault of the mainboard :\

Also - I have a mate who has the same mainboard (but with a Duron700) and his CPU temp is 30C - 20 lower than me!!!

Should I go and do this arctic silver then or will it not make enough difference to justify the hassle and fear factor (I've never played with the heatsink before).

Thanks for the help so far - I'd like to avoid drilling holes in my case if at all possible though (I already have 1 case fan at the front - apparently this creates some kind of 'suck through' effect or summat) :)

The artic silver will make a difference of about 3-7 degrees in most cases. You definatly need some more ventilation though.

Im guessing your in the UK because of the BTinternet website. So if you looking for a good place to get cooling gear then i recommend The Overclocking Store (http://www.theoverclockingstore.co.uk). Look for the System exhaust blower (pictured below) and maybe another cpu cooler. I recomend the Alpha cooler or the ThermoEngine cooler.

ThermoEngine

Hope this helps.

I got a fop38 for my 1.1 but it still aint enough??? as u can read from my older post my idle temp is the same as my CHASE temp.

But the loaded temp can get up too over 45c, right now im at 46c while running prime95 while the chase temp is only 23c.

So i really think my chip is about to die since the idle temp are so low but the loaded temp is HIGH:( Now i have tried everything 4 different heatsinks/fans but none of them are cool enough on loaded. Using globalwin thermal paste!

Also to check i have now put back my duron750 and the idle temp was much higher around 10c over the chase temp but my loaded temp was just fine so i ask what the F*** is wrong with my TB chip???? I also tried the cpu in my friends abit card but it was exactly the same:( He got a TB1.2ghz and hes temps is fine but when i put mine in hes mobo it was just the same.

It hasent always been like this, when i think of it it happened after running cpucool but i have uninstalled it and also formated my disk but still the same.

I also had changed some settings in cpucool and touched the software fsb in it. but dunno what i set it too! can that have caused it?????????

Also it got VERY unstable

Thx for ur help

Thanks loads for the advice Liquid!! :)

The exhaust fan looks good to me 'cos there's no drilling =D

I'll probably get one of those and try the arctic silver when my m8 is free to help me.

Cheers m8 =)

The problem with that exhast fan is that it installs in a PCI/ISA slot from the looks of it. Aren't those normally located on the bottom backside of the case? Heat rises, so wouldn't a fan installed higher up really benefit the computer more? I have an average sized atx case and was looking at the enermax power supply for 3 reasons:

1) 2 fans in the PS so it actually sucks air in from the side and bottom, right off the CPU

2) it's 350watts, vs my 250watt ps I have now

3) They're going on ebay for 50 bucks each.

Now, this is just personal experience, but the hot air really comes out of my PS fan as far as actual temperature goes. I would say forget the slot cooler and get a better power supply that will expell more air.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

The slot cooler does take a space in a spare slot. The way this works is best under your video card to pull heat way from that, the default setup of the exhaust blower is set with the fan facing the bottom of the case pulling air from as it rises from the bottom.

With a slight modification I turned my fan to such from the top. This way when my cooler is pushing air out it is either hitting my 80mm fan directly beside it and sucking it out of the case or it is coming out the other side and hitting the exhaust and again sucking it out of the case, while my other fans are replensihing the air inside the case that the above two gets rid of.

The power supply would also help a great deal. But make sure the power supply has sufficent extraction otherwise you will end up overheating the powersupply. As 350's tend to produce a fair bit of heat themselves - trying to cope with the extra heat from the processor can have some effects on the lifetime of a power supply.

The only i can suggest is that you try it. If you still find that your having problems then try something else, after all the exhaust blower is only about a tenner anyway.

By the way that slight modification i done to mine was to take the metal plate for screwing into a slot, turn it around and clip back on again so your rotating the fan from the bottom to the top. You can also open it up so it sucks air into the case as apposed to extracting it.

Hope this helps.

Today I installed an exhaust fan just like the one in the pic on Liquid's post above and It has made a difference.

It's a Titan Exhaust fan and cost only £6.50 and has lowered my CPU temp to 44 as I'm typing this (the PC has been on for a while and I've just finished a long Unreal Tournament session) which is 6 degrees lower than before (1 degree per pound I paid for the fan - lol :) )

I'm pretty pleased with the effect - It's brought the temp down to a level I'm content with for the moment. I'll put my arctic silver on soon and that sould bring my temp down to somewhere in the 30's if what u say is correct =D

I also fitted another 128MB of RAM today - I don't know what difference (if any) this has made to the heat as I fitted the fan at the same time.

I'm not bothered that the fan takes up a PCI slot - I've got mine sitting right below the graphics card (which has it's own tiny fan) as suggested.

Luckily my new fan was pointing upwards by default when I installed it so it is drawing hot air from the top of the case.

Thanks very much for your advice - I feel much happier about my system - as long as it stays under 50 degrees I'll be content :)

Best cheap upgrade I ever made :)

Glad I could help, I myself am running one of these, their cheap but very effective.

Plus it really helps keeping that hot agp card cool., also good to put a couple in down the case in between cards for a bit of extra ventilation, 3 is a good number top one extracting, middle one bring air into the case, and the bottom one extracting, gets a nice circular airflow going.
