Well, I have not posted anything here in a good long while, however i thought you may get a kick out of this =D.

My brother got bored this summer so he decided to mod a fingerprint sensor made by AuthenTec into his mouse. Well that and repaint it and build a USB powered LED pad for under the mopuse pad to get a nice blue glow stripe ^^ (unfourtnatly in this pic he did not have the PC on :-/ )

Anyways I just thought I would throw this out there, BTW it all still works perfectally, and if anyone cares I can ask him for a pic in the dark... when all the LEDs are on =P

heh... what do you guys think, would you want a mod like this for your mouse? or does this just seem like another gaudy losing idea?

well, if you're into security, that's a great mod, and I would sayt the best place to put a fingerprint sensor, lol. very nice work.

oh yea, and you must get pics of it in the dark! gotta see that thing lit up!

heh I will tell my bro to take the pic, we will see if he does it... lol a 200 mile slap won't work well =P

And to be honest I have one of the sensors in an external pod on my computer and i never use it for security purposes hardly... but using its password replacement software is amazing... at this point i have the password to just about everything saved with it... so i just have to lay my finger on it all the time =P

Only trouble is I think if i lost the sensor now i wouldnt know half of my passwords >.<

I will have the pics tonight, my brother tried to email them to me last night but they got waylayed somewhere =( . The sensors are unfourtnatly pretty expensive still. The company that makes the silicon doesnt actually sell the sensors in a consumer pod, but a few other companies do...froogle link to some products with the sensor in them (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=authentec)

That's pretty cool.... so does the fingerprint sensor actually work? If so... what program do you use?

I work in a hospital and we use these on ourPyxis (http://www.pyxis.com) machines. Pretty simple little USB devices. I've been tempted to take one of the older ones home and see how hard it would be to adapt to a PC. Probably only need drivers to understand the input from the device. Ours just operate as a password alternative sorta overwrites what input the keyboard would provide in the password field.

Yea the sensor works, I use a program called OmniPass by Softex Inc. I used to use somethign called Secure Suite(somethign like that) by IO software, but omnipass just works way better, much less of a system drain too =D

Thats cool. I saw a fingerprint mouse before, wasnt even a mod too. It had it tho where your thumb rests on the side of the mouse. But it didnt glow and stuff like the modded one. Tell your bro good work and I want to see a dark pic!

Hey all! Thanks for posting all your comments about my mod! Since I finally got registered here at OC, I’ll tell you a little about it

This mouse was originally a "Designer Scroll Optical Mouse Model H3003" only 6.00 from newegg.com :D, a navy blue mouse with silver buttons. The fingerprint sensor is an AES3400 produced by AuthenTec (http://www.AuthenTec.com)

The sensor was given to me in a small black pod Authentec Entrepad AES 4000 silicon sensor (http://www.targus.com/product_details.asp?sku=PA460U) however, that pod would never have fit into the mouse. So, it had to go, I took apart the pod and made a blue faceplate for the sensor to protect the circuitry, I figured if the sensor was going to rest under the palm of my hand, it'd better have some kind of protection...

The mouse was simple to disassemble, a small screw from the underside and it was in two pieces. To keep with the blue theme, I painted the two buttons blue, then went to work on cutting a finger-shaped hole in the back of my mouse. Lacking a dremmel, :( I was forced to do this cut with a single speed 1,200 RPM drill. And that was about as fun as it sounds... none the less, with a little help from my good friend "plastic cement" everything came out smooth (plastic cement: for modding, its a must. it is used to bond plastics together, it physically melts the plastics and they dry as once piece. it is also useful for smoothing plastic.

To hold the sensor on the surface of the mouse, I shaved away as much plastic on the underside as possible and tried to get the sensor to lay as flush to the top of the mouse. Then a little ol' fashioned hot glue was in order, its quite sturdy, believe it or not :). As it is, it’s about 1 CM from the surface and angled downward so it fits quite comfortably when you put your finger on it

So there you have it, the mod in a very abbreviated form. There seemed to be quite a demand for pictures in the dark, im flattered, so, here they are. The mouse pad is a glow-pad, I made that as well, first two are dark the next two are UV =P
