I think HDD's should be masters.

i am assuming you mean a secondary drive :)...

but i think i would set it to master, but why not a slave on the secondary channel under your master hd?

put your 2 hds on one ide cable, and your "bay" drives on another.

set you backup drive to slave, and your primary (one with windows) to master

does that help, if not LMK

Someone told me to definitely not to put the two "bay drives" on the same cable. the reasoning behind it was that when copying a disc, its not a good idea to be reading and writing along the same cable. If this isn't clear enough ask me, cause im not sure im doing a good job explaning.

EDIT: oh and by the way there is only one ide hdd, the other is sata

Ok im not sure then what you should have setup, and i have two bay drives on the same cable and i have not seen any problems.

If you have two CD drives on the same IDE cable, and you want to copy a CD, with the source disk in one while the other burns the copy "on the fly", some computers will produce a buffer underrun error.

My last MOBO had that problem. However, my current settup has them both on the same cable and the copies go just fine.
Go figure?

As a person who has studied the ATA/ATAPI specs 4 thru 7
in detail, I can say that the the assignment of master or
slave status makes no difference in speed. I suppose that
wouldn't prevent a manufacturer from making a bogus
controller where that was true, however.

As has been pointed out by others, however, if you are burning
CDs or DVDs there are issues to address. The standard IDE
controller has two channels with two ports on each channel.
You can usually get full bandwidth between channels, but
because the two ports on each separate channel are shared,
you can end up splitting the bandwitdh if you are transfering
data between port 0 and port 1 (Master and Slave).

So of your burner doesn't have a large cache or you are not
using "burn proof" buning software, you are better off if your
source is on one channel and your burner is on the other.
That way, if you are doing little else on the system the full
bandwidth is available for transfering data for the burn.

If you burn CD to CD directly you are almost always better
off if one is on the primary channel and the other is on the
secondary channel.

Here are the two drives im getting... http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=Plextor+Premium

and
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=CRX300E%2FB2

does this mean i should put them on the same ide cable?

Sure, putting two CD drives on different IDE channels is theoretically better, but unless you put your hard drives up in your 5.25" bays, cable length is a serious problem. It is usually impossible to run an IDE cable from your motherboard up to your CD drive and then back down to your hard drive.

I just have all my bay drives on one cable and my HDD on the other. as for burning, you should copy whatever to the HDD first and the burn it. its usually not a good idea to read from a cd and burn at the same time. unless you want some shiny coasters ;)

either way, personally i CAN (that doesnt mean i do) make backup copies of even the hardest games out there, and i have my 2 cd roms on one ide cable, and 2 harddrives on my other cable
