put a small amount on a clean chip die, then spread it about paper thin with a flat clean edge, like a credit card, bis card and so on...

Thanks, I think I have it on too thick, BTW what temp would be to high for a T-Bird 750@1 gig voltage 1.80? Mine idles at about 52 C?

I do this with silver as with other paste: apply a little spec on my index finger and spread out over the cpu surface in a thin layer. Using the finger offers me best control. I don't know how toxic the silver stuff is, but I wash my hands very well afterwards.

52C seems a bit high, under load it might be ok, but not at idle. I am at 40C/44C with alpha cooler open case

Don't use your finger to apply the paste; apparrently the oils from your skin arn't very thermally conductive and do rub off onto the paste. So, as previously stated use a credit card or razor or something. Also clean off the surface of both proccessor and hs with rubbing alcohal to get rid of any oils.

I have dry skin, but I could also clean my finger with alcohol ;-)

put a small amount about three times the size of a pin head dont spread it out the pressure from the HSF will do that for you

52 idle is VERY high what type of HSF are you using?

Arctic Silver provides a pretty good how to here. (http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm) Check it out if you have time. I just spotted the site today and bookmarked it. Good luck.

you really should consider looking at a new hsf i also own a chrome orb and it now sits on a shelf in my computer room

when you read hsf reviews look for the c/w rating I believe the rating for your hsf is around .95 my swiftech is .20 any fan at or around .40 should do nicely

the site that seablac gave is a nice one but perhaps I little on the over kill side , I have literally removed and replaced my hsf (7 now) a hundred times and get no difference in results with a drop or spreading it out when I remove the hsf the stuff is always spread out on the entire chip , I have to agree with the comment on twisting the hsf while installing it

*L* Your probably right Kat but I like overkill.
Plus those of us that are just learning to do this should pay extra attention to the details right now until we have a feel for the requirements. Veterans like yourself can get away with that!
