i just cut up an amd heat sink and ground it down a bit with my super cool colbalt carbide dremel tip =)
ok info is nf7-s v2.0 board and i used an amd stock cpu HSF that came with a tbred-b 2700 .
so i cut it down and ground it so that it wouldnt touch the capacitors or any coils .
i then used arctic silver apoxy ( this stuf drys very very fast and you have to be very careful not to get any on the board)
remember to wear goggles because aluminum chips in the eye mean no more sight and since my wife is hot i would be disapointed to loose my sight .(though it would give me a reason to invent brail playboy)
I'll gladly host your pic(s). Check your PM box.
i'm an official authorized image hosterrrrrr

Ya those are real sweet........good thing too with the AS epoxy, they won't be comin off.
Does this help overclock?
:p

well theory says that it will reduce heat which makes power just a little more stable and predictable so if your cpu power has less noise then it should .(noise as in line noise or power warble )

Good work.
Maybe you could look around for infra-red (IR) images of your board during operation. Such pictures can reveal unexpected hotspots on the board- prime candidates for more custom heatsink work.

I've been considering doing this myself. After seeing what a great job you did here, I'm inspired to do the same. Great craftsmanship
Thorilan.

Problem is, you mounted the heatsink to the plastic part of the MOSFETs, which means the heatsink won't work very effectively.

How do you figure?

yeah man my friend put mosfet heatsinks on his 8rga+ and the heatsinks worked so well that he had to put a fan on them cause they got too hot

I've seen mosfets get so hot that they've unsoldered themselves and still worked. The unit did'nt though obviously. Those things can take some serious heat.
I wish i could cool my mosfets like that, but on my mobo they're not aligned, i would have to cut small heatsinks for each one of them. Anyway, that's a great job there!

Awesome job there. Have you considered selling them for the people who are lazy and have the same board? :D

Nice work! They apear to be touching the metal part of the mosfets.

Well, modern CPUs(including Pentium 3, Athlon, Pentium 4, and Britney) are made of MOSFETs(CMOS technology), and I think the maximum temperature is a little lower than the boiling temperature of water.

i just might be able to do that since some of my students have the equipment.

lol i live in japan so the shipping alone would cost way to much not to mention the fact that it took a couple of hours to cut and grind to the individual board and i had to buy a proc to get the heatsinks =)
How about some pics of your wife :-)
do to specific leagal things i cant tell you who my wife is but i can link you to a website she is featured on . i will not give any hints to which one she is though so dont even ask

That's a great opportunity. If you can, I'm sure many people here would be interested in seeing the results.

yeah i would love to see more results of motherboards that are IR'ed, i have only seen 8rda+ so far on a website dedicated to that mobo.

yeah i'd like to see some boards IR'ed too specially my board.
btw that is some AWESOME work. i would've caved and bought ram sinks for them. good job man that's a great mod.

hehe thanks everyone. it will e a couple months before i can ir it because i have to have the system built first ( still waiting on the case to arive and i have to get my cascade and also do a ton of modding and painting ( im building a real beast)
but ill see about checking it out once i do

Wow, thorilan I was going to do the exact same thing on the same mobo with the same heatsink that you did. I just happend to see this thread. Well it looks like the idea will work. :D Is that dreamal tip expensive? The only thing I have for my dermal are there "heavy duty" thin discs that break about every minute so I replace a lot of them. Its pretty funny, they just fly apart.... they havn't hit my eye yet. I think I will get somthing better to cut with.
I would start wearing googles:D but they shouldn't just fly apart that often... what r u cutting, and how hard are you pressing?
Big_Baller
07-21-03, 03:04 PM
Lol its some cheap stuff. they are these discs that come in a container of about 15. I don't want to pay for anything right now. I looked at a carbite tip....it was 11.99. I dont think the disc I use are ment for metal, but I have used them on metal for awhile now. I will check home depot.

the tip cost me about 15 bucks and is well worth it . the secret to dreels is let the rpm not the pressure , do the work.
as for the tip it was taking chunks of aluminum out like it was nothing( not good for very fine work because you can easily go to far ) but man i really got down and dirty with it
you will save money if you buy high quality bits if you use your dremel regularly because they last a lot longer and if you know anything about using the WRONG tools for a job you know that trips to the hospital can cost money .
so for anyone that gets a dremel i recomend they get at least 1 hih quality grinding bit 2 good polishing bits and 1 "cut through anything ginsu kunfu bit with gi-joe grip"

Thorilan you said that you have to be careful not to get the artic alumina epoxy on the mobo? But artic alumina epoxy is non conductive and it would probably help transfer more heat from surrounding the cap with artic alumina epoxy, since the plastic isn't meant to transfer heat.
