I'm looking to buy a new system... when I can afford it.
But in the mean time I want to try my first Overclocking attempt on my existing computer. Please advise on what to try to boost the speed (hopefully without spending much money on this older system).

Here's what I have:
AMD K6 233MHz with standard heatsink/fan
Gigabyte-586ATV4B motherboard
Award Software bios PCI/PNP 586
128MB RAM, 72 pin EDO 2k refresh
Voodoo 4500 32MB PCI card
Maxtor 10GB 5400rpm Harddrive
NETRAM AT Mid-Tower case with one front fan

The Gigabyte site showed the 233 is the maximum AMD CPU usable.

P.S. The new system I'm considering is as follows:

Asus CUSL2-C, i815EP Chipset
PIII 933EB
Radeon 64MB DDR, GeForce 2MX or GeForce 2GTS
GlobalWin FOP32-1 CPU fan
Sound Balster Live value PCI PnP
Micron Electronics 256MB DIMM (x2) 7.5ns gold leads unbuffered
Maxtor 30.7GB DiamondMax Plus 7200rpm, ATA-100, 2MB, 8ms

Hi Doug, found your post! :)

I still wouldn't go for an EB CPU, I would stick with an "E", but you already know that... But hey, if you aren't gonna overclock it much, I guess it's ok, I won't be the judge of that.

Have you found anything in your manual about changing FSB or multiplier?

go to www.gigabyte.com.tw and find your motherboard... its probably in the discontinued section. There is tons of information on your board there im willing to bet.

I don't have an manual, but have looked at the Gigabyte site in the discontinued board section. I found a chart which shows different versions of updated bios, and download zip files, to cure various listed problems. Should I download any version, or the latest version, and revise my bios? I didn't do this before because I didn't seem to have any of the listed problem needing curing.

How do I find out how to adjust the bios settings on my board (without a manual)? I'll look for a way to order or download a manual from the site.

My board is a GA-586ATV4.

I got a PDF manual for the Gigabyte MOBO, and it's a bit Greek to me. I'm no sure what to look for within the pages. I downloaded the last upgrade of bios for the board, but am awaiting advice as to whether to do anything with it...

I'm curious what "E" chip you might recommend. With the Asus motherboard I am looking at (CUSL2-C) which is a good "E" chip to get good overall performance?

Since seeing the performance gains available on the 133Mhz FSB and above, I would veer towards anything on a high bus speed with some really good memory. I'm on for buying some mushkin and doing some 166 business
