I was wondering which game for PC you think is the nicest looking one... One I can think of is Hegemonia Legions Of Iron.... what do you think?

AFIsoldier

never heard of that...or seen it...and i play slow EC graphics games just cause speed is more important to me

Yeah, Hegemonia looks good. I can only think of SW Galaxies and Bloodmoon, right now...Unreal II didn't look bad either.

Unreal II, Chaser, and Serious Sam both score tops from me, :)

I have heagemonia, and although I think it looks good, I dont feel space games can be called good looking, as in my opinion they are pretty hard not to make good looking, not much to support but wide expanse and a few spheres, and your in space, so everything looks wonderous - but the explosions in it are very cool , colourful and well executed (although I would like there to be a couple of different ones for each ship rather than just the one)

chaser, again I dont think looked particulary good I think the only thing I thought "ooo" were the various little reflections - apart from that quite bland looking.

but doom3, HL2 are looking pretty sweet - Unreal 2 current one that is nice on the eye.

People still put graphics over gameplay?

If we're looking for straight 'pretty', then UT2k3, Splinter Cell and Warcraft III are about the best looking imo. They're also some of the best playing.

Unreal II has my vote, gameplay was very lacking.

Warcraft III looks so much better than any RTS in my opinion. I like Blizzard's style of graphics a lot, like WoW looks better than SWG even tho it right now isn't as advanced.

Legend of Zelda: Windwaker has great graphics, but in a different genre. THat and XIII look awesome.

I like UT2k3 and Battlefield due to the sheer size of Battlefield.

I think that WCIII has some pretty nice graphics, very cartoon like. But I can see where some people would argue about how some games graphics can merit a higher rating than others. A fps game has to be harder to render a high polygon count than a slow puzzle solving game is. Maybe some of you wont follow me on this but there is a point here, it is just hard to explain. Like the graphics in Max Payne I thought kindof sucked, but at the same time I think that they where intentionally made to look a bit rough around the edges to help with the story. I think that UT2K3 graphics are pretty stellar, but they have that high gloss look that could make a lot of other games look good too if they where to ad that effect. I think that you will find that graphics are a big matter of opinion.

WCIII does what 800x600? Blizzard as much as I love their games needs to create something a little less pixelated IMO. When they release DiabloII at 640x480 I cried.

Yeah, I agree with you somewhat, but Diablo II was still good looking at 640x480....compared to the original, DII was way ahead imo.

Unreal 2, and Splinter Cell.

Upcoming games: S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Doom 3, Half-Life 2. (The texture work in Stalker is incredible)

warcraft 3 is far from pretty.. pretty horrible graphics maybe..but then again its an rts so what do you expect.

I agree. But look at Rise of Nations. It's not 3d, but it looks amazing.

ninthebin
07-20-03, 07:15 AM
rts doesnt always mean ugly, its just they have alot CPU work to handle with everything going without have to support Unreal2esque detail in models and particle effects. but Rise of Nations is a nice looking game - C&C Generals also was a bit sexeh - Galaxy Andromeda (formelly Imperium Galactica 3) is also a very nice looking RTS

maxvla, may I ask what you mean by clarity with chaser - as I really think it was nothing special graphically, just some pretty reflection effects mixed in

Have you ever actually played Warcraft III? Try setting it at 1152x864 w/ all the pretty things turned on w/ 8xAA and 16xAF. Then fire up the Starfall or Tranquility ultimates, and zoom in real close to the battle.

When you do that, come back and tell me it sucks.

I am with Oni on this one. For one thing, DII did 800X600 and SC is what did 640X480 with no options. And WCIII goes way up there in the resolutions and has very pretty graphics, ones that will bring even the latest and greatest vid cards to thier knees. Playing TD (tower defense) maps when the lightning towers and ice towers are shooting rapidly makes for a pretty light show. And anything around water is beautiful. I dont think that those who hack on the game have truely given it a chance and just flat out have a thing against Blizzard. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions though and thats cool :D . The only thing that I dont agree with is using non-facts to support your argument :( .

Some RTS games can look very good . I play Command and Conquer Generals and WC3 at high res with at least 4X AA and 8X aniso . Trust me , they are gorgeous like that . With my rig I could turn up the goodies even more if I wanted to .

With that said, my vote goes to Unreal2 but Enclave is decent second .

Oni
07-20-03, 02:48 PM
Enclave looks very pretty, actually. What kind of game is it? Is it like Morrowind or Neverwinter Nights?

edit: d/ling the demo now.

Cowboy X
07-20-03, 02:53 PM
It is a hack and slash RPG . The graohics are very good for a game that is a DX7 title with some DX8 effects . The gameplay is another story . While some people like it many hate it and CGW gave it 2 stars out of 5 ( not good ) . Imagine if the graphics were just average what the score could've been then .

I have seen it by a friend on his Ti4200 without AA or Af and it is beautiful . I will borrow it from him soon and try it on my 9700 Pro with the goodies turned on .

anyone seen the screenshots of Breed? i found'em quite impressive...

its one of those games that i'm waiting for.. like Doom3 & Halo. never gave a shi7 about the original HL, let alone HL2!

Cowboy X
07-20-03, 04:10 PM
Breed loks nice but it will have to competre with Halo,UT2004 and the rumoured multiplay mods for Unreal2 .These will all look very good and we can't forget Halflife 2 will be out then as well . It will be a case of who does it better ? ; Since Halo , Breed and UT2004 seem to have similar if not an identical gameplay style ( from what has been said so far . Half Life 2 however doesn't have enough info available on its multiplay modes . )

When I put a "?" at the end of my sentence it means I was guessing. I'm still guessing but I remember being ****ed at blizzard when they released it. If my memory serves me (I'm old) it was released at 640x480 and later patched to allow 800x600.

WCIII on the other hand probably looked pixelated on my machine at work because I couldn't turn it all the way up. I never did play it at home... In that regard I was being unfair.

BTW, I love Blizzard games. Still believe SC is the all time "BEST" RTS. An while I loved Diablo I was expecting more out of the box for Diablo2 although the cinematics were a cut above most other games I've ever played.

No one has mentioned "Sacrifice" That game had incredible and scalable graphics for a RTS.

That Enclave screenie is extremely nice BTW.

The only way you can get DII to run at 800x600 was to buy the expansion, which was well worthwhile anyways, imo :)

Blizzard has yet to release a game that has failed to impress me in any way.

IMHO winamp 2.0 has the best graphics....hehe ok j/kin. But I do like C&C generals graphics for an RTS, and UT2k3s are really nice, so is unreal II. Here are my choices today...
1) UT2003
2)Unreal 2
3)Enter the Matrix (its not the best visual eye candy but its tooting good times!)
4)Hegemonia...

One game Im disappointed with is Freelancer... I found it nothing special.
Doom 3 looks awesome but the demo seems a bit scaled down... maybe its the res..
Can anyone recommend any demos?

Enclave looks great, but i cant download the demo for some reason. I click the button and it asks me to put in my email and DoB or i can click "download with registering" (but that just takes me to another screen where i have to put in the same info) so i put in the info and hit submit and it just says "thank you for registering" and no download starts.

Well Serious Sam, has some Serious Scenery :). THe egyptian pyramids and the like are just beautiful well worth the 5-10$ it goes for now.

However, SOFII is THE MOST REALISTIC FPS I have ever played as far as graphics go. Scenery imho isnt that great. BUT, when you shoot someone, in the head, you see brain webs fly out. When you shotgun someones head, it blows apart like a watermelon. I have knifed at someones head after I killed him and sure enough there was a grey colored brain inside. Gun shots are placed accurately on the body in shot wounds which look like shot wounds.

I really can't describe the realism, this game is VERY graphic.

Needitcooler
07-27-03, 02:54 AM
hahaha. You can't describe the realism.......

Sof2 has great models, but I like the graphics in Vietcong the best at this point. Sure UT2k3 is pretty, but it still looks a little cartoony to me. I like to feel like I am part of the action, and Vietcong really sucks you in. Plus the music rocks.

Okay time for me to add a bit of low quality spam to this thread.

First off Enclave. Enclave looks great. What the screenshots don't show you is all the quality environmental animations that the game has. Such as the stone bricks blowing out of the walls in the first level. Also, the performance is better than most console ports. It actually performs round about what it should which seems too much to ask with most console ports. With that said, the game is ghey, trust me. Play it for about four levels and it will **** you off :)

Vietcong's graphics are great in a more realistic kind of way. Just watching the intro where you're in the helicopter flying over the Vietnamese rice fields was VERY impressive. I'd never seen a game attempt to render a sequence like that before and vietcong did it wonderfully. Your camp is great too, with all the trenches etc.

BUT the performance sucks. I get choppy framerates at 1024x768 on my gaming rig below and default detail settings. The game runs off the devs' own engine so that is probably why, it seems when a game has a propriatary or rare engine it always does 20fps less than it should. For example, Serious Sam 1 & 2, Gothic 1 (especially), Gothic 2, and Morrowind. They don't perform badly necessarily but its just not as zippy as Epic's or Id's code.

As for what I think the best looking PC game is I have a few I'd like to mention. The first being Soul Reaver 2. Yeah its pretty old but this game was extremely impressive graphically. The game has all kinds of great architecture and the engine renders it extremely fast with no loading (!). It even has Dx8 water, which is impressive for a game released in late 2001. I'll get a screenie for you guys later :)

Silent Hill 2. Yeah yeah another console port but you should seriously see what this game does with dynamic lighting. Its easily the most impressive and effective lighting I've seen in a PC game since Neverwinter Nights.

its far to easy to define the best graphics in a game by the word 'pretty' and many games fall under this discription as engines are tweaked and improved over time.

The best graphical game imho must have not followed on from what went before, but changed things, been radical, been the first... changed atitudes and the winner of that imho must be Quake.
The game simply changed gaming, it does not suffer badly from lag when compared to other games of its age and still looks remarkably good considering how old it is... its a classic, in the same way that space invaders and packman is.. Like these games Quake changed things and made room for the clones to follow such as UT, HalfLife, etc

Have to disagree with twump (on first page)

WarCraft 3 is GORGEOUS. Blizzard has a way of making graphics look amazing even in RTS titles. It just has that lifelike look to it (not realistic lifelike, just "alive" lifelike). UT2K3 and Unreal2 also both sport beautiful eye candy.

W3 is OK, but... Generals has it topped easily.

Even then my favorite game graphics are definitely in Raliisport Challenge. It looks like the real thing, I swear, and the replay mode is second to none. Screenshots dont do it justice, you have to play the game to appreciate the graphics. Only think that could look better in Rallisport is water, but there isn't much in the game anyway.

Also, back to RTSs I think Age of Mythology has really good graphics also. I love the way the sun shimmers on the water :)
