View Full Version : Best Palomino

I'm looking to upgrade my current machine to its upper limits. Unfortunately, my Iwill KK-266R+ will only use the Palomino core.

Also, I'm an overclocker. I'm currently water cooling a T-bird 1 GHz but it's only stable to 1.152 GHz. It's just not enough anymore.

Which Palomino will eek out the most overclocked speed for my system?

Please note: buying a new Mainboard is not an option right now.

Try to find either an AGOIA 0213 1600+ or an AROIA stepping, either should do real close to 2ghz with a little coaxing( Vcore) and proper cooling

the 1600+ agoia's were the best pallies - 2ghz i think was about the best they could do though.

Thanks for the input. Now I have to find one but knowing what to look for helps.

Palominos are very difficult to find and now come at premium price.

Unless you have drive images that require you to keep your mobo, you're opting for frustration with unlocking etc.

When you find a Palomino, please post back what it costs nowdays.
Is your goal running a Palomino at 2GHz?

Note that $44 factory unlocked T-Bred B easily hits 3000+ and more with basic Thermalright cooling.

Why not spend $75 or so on an nForce2 mobo and take that cheap T-Bred B to stratosphere with your water cooling? Aren't you tempted?

The price isn't too bad for any Pali. The problem is finding one. I'm looking to Newegg.com and am finding an XP1900 AGOGA for $60. Most vendors don't know what they have. They say they have a Pali but the part # is AXDAxxxx.

I just want to top out what I have before I buy all new. That was why I bought what I have now. It had room to grow. When I do buy all new, I want that to grow too.

I don't have a 'pressing' need to upgrade. The only reason that I'm looking so hard at it now is that Pali's are getting harder and harder to find.

Besides, when I retire the unit from being MY machine, it will become my server and my PII 266 server can go away.

The unlocking prospect is not a problem. I unlocked my T-bird. It took several hours but I figured it out. I got a 152 MHz overclock on it. Also, I've got more time than $$ so I might as well unlock a pali. :)

Any way, What do you think about the XP 1900 AGOGA?

DMT3C is how you spot a Pally, the "M".

Things changed a lot since your system was out and that's why overall Pally is a Pally. It's foolish to blow $60+ on it when $44 T-Bred Bs are hitting speeds that dwarf any Palomino.

Palominos are harder and harder to find but IMHO, and think about this, that's like in the days of 1 GHz Athlons someone saying, K-2's are harder and harder to find, better get me one of them.

Sell the current mobo, add a few $ - get a cheap Soltek or Epox nForce2 - spend less $ on the 1700+ T-Bred B and watch it fly.

Sorry but now you confused me.

DMT3C is how you spot a Pally, the "M".

I thought it was the AXDA v AX. Is that not right? Hmmmm. Now I have to redo all of my research.

I understand your line of thought about getting rid of the Pally but I still have my reasons.

Thanks for your input.

Yup, the XP1600+ AGOIA/AROIAs were really good overclockers. Got mine past 2ghz w/ some extra vcore. After a few months I replaced it w/ the tbred b in my sig. It's been sitting in it's box since.

I might be selling it in a week or two.

Unfortunately, I can't get into the classifieds because I don't have enough posts yet. I'm working on it though. :)

You should really make sure you can't run a TBred. My mother's PCChips board (yes, PC chips, the crappiest mobo brand known to man) with it's old SIS chipset can only run a Palamino, but yet it's running my old TBred B @ 2200MHz. Something to think about...

I respectfully disagree with Fever.

I had an old Soyo specifically rated to run T-Breds as well a Palominos.
Although T-Breds may appear to run on those mobos, there will be problems so much so that Soyo pulled that rating from its web site.

If the mobos official web site says only run Palominos in it, and you run T-breds on it anyway, you're potentially in for a world of pain with all kinds of problems that you may not even attribute to the CPU at first.

what kind of problems thought i would ask b4 anyone else

It's about this:
1. check with your mobos web site
2. if the web site says you can't run a T-Bred with your mobo, do not.
3. if you do, your system may or will:
freeze and lock up, not boot at all, work with one OS and not with other (in my case), a whole host of problems usually associated with other components or Windows, that went away once I put a Palomino back into a mobo that Soyo said do not run T-bred B's on it:

Thank you all for your help. As far as the T-bred on my Iwill KK266R+, it won't work.

Iwill has a set of forums that I visit to keep an eye on what is going on. It is well documented that it does not work.

I searched Pricewatch.com and pricegrabber.com. I felt that I could not trust either one for what I wanted. Most of the stores that advertise there won't check the stepping nor will they garuntee a Pally on the 1700 and up.

The few places that did check for me no longer have Palominos. (E.G. Newegg.com)

In the end, I just (like 5 min ago) bought one on Ebay. I feel that I'm taking a chance but no more than if I ended up with a low end T-bred from a .com.

This is what I got:
XP 1600+, AGOIA core
$43 USD w/shipping.

I'll post more after I get it.
