Tried hooking up two PSUs, and at the same time installed a thermistor between my waterblock and TBird 1ghz. Both PSUs fire up, then boot stops. Only one PSU will work, but no action from TBird. Unhook the dual PSU setup, still nothing. Suspecting the worst, I took an 850 Duron and tried it in the setup. Fired right up. Tried the TBird in the Duron setup. it's DOA. Thinking that the dual PSU setup had something to do with it, I then unlocked the Duron, put on the thermistor and waterblock, and fired it up. Got 1 boot, then crap. Turns out the thermistor kept the waterblock just far enough away from the CPUs that both got fried, in maybe 20 seconds. BTW, it was hard to check the fit because the mobo was in the box. Turns out to be a VERY expensive lesson.

Bummer man. That almost hapened to me, except for one safeguard. I picked up a digital thermometer Sunday and was preparing to do some on-board thermistor versus the bead measurements. I placed the bead on the substrate of the CPU just nudged up against the core. I mounted the HSF and tugged on the pickup wire going to the bead. It was stuck tight. Message: the bead, though very very small, was higher than the core and pinched between the HSF and the substrate. I took off the HSF and went with plan B. An older unused HSF with a hole in it.

My condolences - that's really a horrible story. Do you have any warranties left on the chips?

Not to knock you, but this shows that one should never perform 2 or more modifications at the same time. Too hard to track, and too much can go wrong.

On the upside processor prices continue to drop, may be you can score a nice 1.2GHz TBird that will make into the 1.4 range.

Good luck

Real Good Day for me. I'm sure the Yin/Yan ethic should balance things out nicely

No warranties, I unlocked both with conductive pen. I just ordered a 1.2g Tbird today.

Good luck

Jesus man...I feel for ya. :( That does bring up a good question though...how do you measure the temp of the core if you have the block on it, and there is not a place for a thermosister?

Good question. The reason for the thermistor was that I was getting wildly different temp readings, and thought an externally readable thermistor placed right next to the core would help. I have read that others have cut holes for thermistors, but not knowing the thickness of the waterblock, I was somewhat leery of cutting a groove or hole in the bottom. Due to the small size of the core, I was also worried about compromising the cooling ability of the block
