why is it when you go to the pc shop and buy and 80gig hdd for example it says its only a 72gig or something similar isnt this false advertising ???

I think this could've been covered in the storage section but...

The reason you get 2 different sizes is because they use 1mb=1000 bits and the os uses 1mb=1024 bytes. Of course there is some overhead for the os file system too which will shrink the size somewhat.
