I read that 2.4 Ghz phones may interfere with a wireless network. I have DSL, DSL Modem, Linksys Wireless Router and a Linksys USB adapter on another computer. I want to buy a 2.4 cordless phone and put it in the same room that has the modem and the router. Even plug it into the same surge protector. Would it interfere with the Network? Is it a definite no-no?
It could interfere with the wireless because it runs in the same frequency. Depends on the quality of the phone, how much it spams the whole frequency range. Putting your wireless network onto different channels might help mitigate the problem, but I wouldn't get the 2.4ghz phone to begin with.

Avoid a phone that uses FHSS technology, if you are going to get a 2.4ghz phone look for one that is DSSS, or better yet get a 900mhz phone (they're better anyway).

I'd just go with a 900 MHz to eliminate the possibility of problems. People do have issues mixing the two.

Okay, that's a definite no on the 2.4 Ghz phone, *lol*. Thanks everyone! :)
I dont even know what idiot though of the idea of using 2.4 Ghz as a frequency for a Phone. A microwave uses 2.4Ghz frequency also, which means when you use the phone and microwave at the same time, you can hear the inteference.
And I'm stuck with a 200 bucks phone that does that, I had to keep it away from the microwave when the microwave is running.
Its ok if you go upstairs and the microwave is downstairs.
When you go to buy the phone, if any sales person at says 2.4Ghz is better reception....blah blah blah, kick him in the balls without even waiting.
I also use a 900Mhz phone and dont see any difference with no probs on frequency, just a waste of more money if you get the 2.4Ghz.

does 5.4ghz stuff interfere with eachother?

there aren't that many 5 ghz devices, so it won't interfere as much. 802.11a is rather more expensive than the other wireless standards ... so i guess we'll just have to deal with interference.
I have a Siemens 2.4ghz phone and 802.11g wireless both running fine at home. I've had no problems of interference at all.
Just another data point.

2.4ghz is the unlicensed ban, so maybe the phone manufacturer saves some money by not having to get a license for the spectrum. Also, the frequency has some relation to the proportions of the antenna, so maybe 2.4ghz lets them use a nicer antenna.

It isn't always that noticable, alot has to do with placement. A FHSS (Frequency Hopping) phone is much more likely to 'walk' on your DSSS (Direct Sequence, which is what 90% of ip based wireless devices are). The reason being is that with DSSS the band used for a single channell is ~23Mhz wide (it overlaps with adjacent channells). FHSS, on the other hand is 1Mhz wide, so within it's channell plan that it uses it can 'walk' on the DSSS devices frequency range multiple times per second. One of the towns I supply with service there is a competing ISP that is using FHSS devices and they have completely killed my signal within a half mile of their AP due to the inband noise that they have created. Within two miles the noise is pretty bad and usually it is at -90db if I have to free-air the antenna..
As far as what I have encountered with 2.4ghz phones it is at best a 60-40 gamble that it will interfere.
