View Full Version : Xbox or PS2
ok, I know this isn't exactly what everyone likes to see here at the old OC forums. Even myself. I want you all to know that my number one love is and always will be the PC for gaming.
That said, a lot of really cool games have come out on PS2 and Xbox. Does anyone know which would be better to get? And has anyone played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic?

well if you want to play Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic right now go with the xbox. But it will be released for the PC on oct 14. I would suggest the gamecube, which doesn't help your decision at all.
Between those two, I'd go w/ the PS2. It has more games (both old and new) and more games that are fun, imo.

PS2 definately. X-box you'll just be getting a ton of games what are either out on the PC or coming out on the PC, nothing you couldn't play without it.....well nothing good.

Well put.
However, I went out and bought an Xbox before I got home and read what you guys have already posted.... Oh well. I have Star Wars now, so "p-shah."
Ninja Gaiden is also coming out for it, so that should be cool.

You made the right choice with the XBOX.
It has a much better future than the PS2.

I agree. The whole PC games line up is enough for most people (with the exception of PC gamers like us) to choose XBox. I mean DIII and HL2 are reason enough for most folks.
If not for the PS2 (the lowest common denominator) holding games back we'd be seeing so pretty sweet games. The only things that will stress the XBox ae PC games like DIII, HL2 & Far Cry and if not for the PC we wouldn't even have those to look forward to. The PS2 was great when it came out, but it just can't keep up and not just on gfx. For example, it can't pull off the physics of HL2, nor could it handle the social and developmental interaction in Fable.
PS2 became great because of the 3rd party exclusives. Third parties being third parties will sell to all consoles if possible. Heck, even Rockstar is anxious to sell to the 13 million potential customers. There is a rumor that they have found a loop hole that will bring the GTA series to the XBox (with the exception of the next GTA) as early as the end of 2003. As of now it is just a rumor tho.
New consoles are 2 years off still (with the possible exception of Nintendo) and personally I'd rather have something that isn't technology limited right now for the next two years.
How difficult do you think it will be to make XBox 2 games for XBox 1. Not too difficult, heh. If you don't want to upgrade in two years you probably won't have to to, to get the latest games. Seriously, they aren't making money off the hardware so why would they put preasure on people to upgrade if they are still making money from licensing when the hardware can still do everything except some of the pretty new visuals.
Here are some games coming out for XBox (** means exclusive among consoles):
Soul Calibur II
True Crime: Streets of LA (GTA style only much larger world)
The Simpsons Hit & Run (for you Simpsons fans)
**Dues EX: Invisable War
**Grabbed by the Ghoulies (rares first XBox exclusive)
Medal of Honnor: Rising Sun
SSX 3 (not sure what it is, but it seems to be popular)
Tony Hawk's Underground
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
**Ninja Gaiden
**Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3
007: Everything or nothing (hopefully better then the last one)
**Project Gotham Racing 2
**Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
**Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (as you know)
**Steel Battalion: Line of Contact (no system has anything close to this mech sim)
**Thief III
**Counter Strike (Condition Zero according to an article I read)
**Fable
Starcraft Ghost
**Conker: Live and Uncut
**DoomIII
**HL2
**Halo 2
**Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
**Star Wars Republic Commando
True Fantesy Live Online
There are a bunch more, but these are some of the bigger named games.
Then there is the best console online gaming network. If you have broadband.
The future is looking pretty good so I wouldn't regret the purchase.
PS2 is still a solid console with a line up to haul it into the future and I'm sure someone could make a great argument for it, but you already bought and should be happy with your decision.

i have ps2, GC, Xbox and this lovely PC. Let me tell you, GC is good, cause of the fun little kiddy games plus two WICKED games like Zelda, the wind waker, and Metrod Prime. Xbox didnt appeal to me that much, so i sold all my games for it, controllers (very crappy adn bulky, hated them) and opened up my Xbox and now have a little comp with a 800 MHz processor, GF 3 Ti, and a 8 gig HDD :) The PS2 is by FAR the best choice, even though its the slowest console out. The games make the system, not the other way around :) PS2 FOR LiFe!!!!

I love my PS2, but i've been debating about getting an xbox. The only reason is because of Halo, and Fusion Frenzy. Great multiplayer games, especially during a week of soccer camp, when you have nothing else to do in your free time except hang out in someone elses room and play Xbox. :D:cool::p

This is why I originally chose XBOX. This is even more true now. I remember reading an IGN article during E3, that stated that the XBOX would actually have more games then PS2 by Q1 2004. IF this holds true, all hope for PS2 is gone, b/c all they will have is the Final Fantasy series.
Also usually when I think of PS2 game selection, all that comes to mind is RPG's and crummy FPS types. I really dislike RPGs, and FPS are for the PC any ways.
My thinking may be alittle extreme, but I have never once second guessed my XBOX purchase.

i would definetly get an xbox though.

Honestly I couldn't choose. Either you want more games and not of a lot of space to save them or a few good games with a s*** load of space to save your games. Right now I own a PS2 because I have stuck with PS since the first. I was happy then and I am still happy.
Keep going sony. ~WiteDeth
Well, I've been playing Star Wars: KotOR, and it's safe to say that, yes it's fun as hell, but no, it looks nothing like it does in teh screenshots. They were either taken on an HDTV, or from the PC version because there are jaggies EVERYWHERE and the colors are definitely not as distict as they look in the screenshots. I mean, look at this (http://xbox.gamezone.com/gamesell/screens/s15857.htm?Num=6). That has got to be at least 1024x768. I mean, TVs have something lower than 800x600 I think. It looks pretty bad. I need an HDTV! Argh!
At any rate, and desipte the not-so-great graphics, it's still pretty damn fun. I'm probably going to buy the PC version when it comes out too just so I can see what it's really supposed to look like, LOL. But I'll keep my Xbox for multiplayer games when buddies come over.
I'm relly thinking about getting this game. I need something to hold me over till HALO2. How long do you think the game is hours wise??

i agree, i personally dont give a flying **** how the 'physics' in hl2 would be on ps2 or the lighting and all that other ****, im sure it would be fun nevertheless. sure there the graphics from xbox games compared to ps2 are greater, but surely not by that much. ill stick with my ps2 thx :p
but i WOULD get an xbox for the sole purpose oh halo :D
Well, with the consoles, I'm not so concerned with graphics anymore. They're going to suck regardless of what system you get. They CAN'T get better, unless you have an HDTV.
HL2 for console will look like crap compared to a PC. I'm not going to buy a game for a console because of the eye-candy, cuz let's face it, there's not much candy there when it comes to consoles...
They're fun though :D

I didn't say HL2 would be better on XBox because of the physics and DIII because of the lighting. I said they won't be ON the PS2 because of those things and that means they just won't be that much fun on the PS2...unless you've got a great imagination or some mind altering drugs;)
But like I said, most people here are safe since they have computers to play those kinds of games on.

I am suprised that no matter how old the technology is on the PS2, it still can run games like Splinter Cell. Games that can stress more powerful pc systems. I seriously doubt that the ps2 can run Half life 2 (if it even can) anything close to the quality of it on a PC or even the xbox.
btw, halo is overrated. :D
I like the xbox not just for a console, but i use mine for a divx/xvid/dvd player more then anything. For what is it now $150, you get a dvd player, divx,xvid,vcd,svcd,mp3,ogg etc player (if you have a modchip) for only $150! I love it, i stream all of my mp3's and mainly movies over the network strait from my computer onto the tv downstairs.

I have been faced with the same decision. I have all but quit playing PC games. I'm tired of paying $50 for a game that doesn't work right, wasn't finished, and is poorly supported.
You put a game in a console and it works.
The PS2 is my choice. You can play old games from the PS1 on it, and there are some pretty cool games out there for PS1. Not to mention I think that the PS2 is a more solid system.
The XBox is made by Microsoft...need I say more? The originals didn't work right. It will be updated soon and knowing M$FT your either not going to be able to play XBox 1 games on it or you'll have to pay for some kind of adapter to do it.
The XBox loads game quicker, but I already have a computer or 5 laying around the house, I don't need another one.

Well, I think that PC games will always be a bit unstable when they first come out because of the literally millions of different combinations of parts, programs, etc. that people have running in their computers. But patching usually takes a day or so and more often than not, the glitches won't be so significant that you can't play the game at all...
Nevertheless, I think having to patch a game, or getting an MMO that is somewhat incompete is a small price to pay for stunning graphics and amazing gameplay. I mean, look at the PS2 and Xbox, they're barely getting online, while I was playing Ultima Online almost 6 years ago (no I don't play it anymore).
I guess my point, right now, is that no matter what, the PC will always be king, but consoles are still a heck of a lot of fun to play on. It's just that PCs are so darn expensive that kids usually don't wanna spend $500 for a video card, $100 for a sound card, $300+ for a mobo and processor, etc. etc. All you need is any old TV and $150, and then maybe $30-50 for a game and you're set. That's the beauty of it.
All in all though, PC will always be my baby.

Do you have the S-video adapter? I got it and the picture quality improved quite a bit. No where near 1024x768 but then again you get to lay on the couch while playing. I'll take the trade off

Hmmm well my dad just broke my PS2, dropped it about waste level and hes about 6'2. Also stepped on my Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance disc in the process and it has a nice little crack. So maybe Ill sell off the rest of my games and get an Xbox and Halo and keep it locked in a safe when Im not using it :p

Wait, you can get an S-video adapter? Does your TV have to have S-Vid in, or can you buy an adapter that will make your TV have S-Video? Because that would be so sweet.
Then again, wouldn't that cause problems, since my TV doesn't support S-Video?

So you are just playing KOTOR on a coax connection Amino? Could be why you don't think the graphs are too good. You can't run off S-vid if your tv isn't capable. Sorry dude.
I just picked up an Advent 20" flat screen from BB and it looks stunning for the price. ($160) Pairing it up to my Xbox with Component Monster cables.
Probably picking up KOTOR tomorrow...
Guess it is selling for $50 everywhere?
