I have been using maxtor drives for 4 years now and i am looking into getting a new 120 gig 8MB drive. I was going to get a maxtor , but i came across a better deal on a seagate.. I don't know much about the quality of seagate, are they any good? In terms of performance, is either company better than the other?

The only difference is the Maxtor is a little faster. Just a tad louder. Its still real quiet. Like no high pitched sound that drives most people mad.
Maxtor is geared toward performance, the Seagates are geared toward reliability. I don't think you could go wrong either way.

Personally I will never buy another Maxtor. Had 3 fail in 2 months, even the RMA maxtor sent me failed, could have been made on a friday i guess but that's a chance i'm not willing to take.
Seagate for me.:)

You might consider the IBM/Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP. Fast and quiet. I got the 120 MB with 8MB cache.
Storagereview (http://www.storagereview.com) has reviews on most of the drives. The latest Maxtor, Seagate, and IBM are all good.

I've had great luck with the 2 Maxtor's I've had. 4 years with no problems.

so far the maxtor sata diamondmaxplus9 has seek times of 9.1-9.3 while the seagate baracuda 7200.7 has seektimes of 8.3-8.6 and are published at 8.5ms
the seagates have always been known for quality and quiet
Yes but for some reason the Maxtor DM9 performs better than the Seagates in all the reviews I've seen.
