as the title says

i shorted one out and now what it was on dont work but i also shorted out other stuff but i only got a problem with the Capacitor

could you make yourself more clear... the answer to the title is yes, usually when you short something it won't work anymore, but what do you mean by i also shorted out other stuff but i only got a problem with the Capacitor ? sorry

Yes, you can blow a capacitor by shorting it out - that's how they usually blow.

If you short it through your hand you get extra points :)

If you're messing around with your PSU and you short a 600 uF cap through your hand you get extra points, a loud bang, and quite a surprise... :D

If it's a crappy capacitor, shorting it might damage it. Most capacitors are designed for rapid discharge though, so shorting them shouldn't hurt the capacitor itself (though it can damage the leads and whatever you shorted it with). I've discharged many a capacitor with a screwdriver and they all worked fine afterwards.

Shorting caps will blow them, but reversing the polarity of the cap(s) then firing up the circuit will certainly be a louder bang, pop, etc! Be careful and a really good multimeter will tell you if the cap still works.

Shorting caps WILL NOT blow them, god knows I've done it with a 100,000uF one. Capacitors are in fact designed for rapid charge and discharge. Several bad things can happen with capacitors though

1) If you short it out a lot of current comes out very quickly - I once managed to weld the capacitor's terminals to a table leg lol.
2) Putting more than the rated voltage in will almost certainly toast a capacitor, as will putting it backwards. They may leak but I don't think they actually explode anymore - some safety perforations in the can. Before an exploding capacitor could propel a marble through a plywood door
3) High temperatures and caps don't mix. That's why they have 80C or 105C ratings.

Depends on what you use, Maybe not with a BB Gun, but sure as hell will blow it out [ of the case, probably your house to ] if you use a .45Caliber

*couldn't help himself ;)*

They are, however, not designed for one side to rapidly discharge into the other side, which is what happens when you short them. It will blow them, I have done it. It goes bang and smells funny. :)

Oh sure, blame it on the capacitor...

i've shorted a few, and they still worked fine. biggest i have shorted is 2 6800 micro farad caps in parall, together. but i have popped one, a 5V rated one on a rectified 24V secondary transformer. it goes POP! and the top split open, smelled like ammonia.

Sorry about that, I did speak to the resident Electrical Engineer at work and he assured me that shorting out a cap will NOT blow it. I'm sorry about the mistaken information. He also did inform me that reversing the polarity will blow the cap.
