I have a cheap HS from 3dcool.com and am having some hot temperatures. So I ordered some arctic silver 2. That should help but I was just thinking that a copper spacer between my proc. and HS would help heat transfer. What I am thinking of is buying a thin piece of copper and lapping it and the HS to a smooth finish. My big question is what should I use between the copper spacer and the HS? The only thing I could come up with is using the arctic silver. I would just buy a new better HS but have no $$.

Thanks for any help.

Tests have conclusively revealed that adding a copper "shim" spacer does not enhance cooling. It may actually hurt cooling a degree or two. A power search using cpu + shim or spacer + cooling should yield some reading material.

are you talking about a SPACER? Or a COLDPLATE?

Coldplates are just a plate (no holes) that go inbetween CPU and HSF.

Spacers fit inside (kind of) the CPU. Spaces prevent crack'd CPU's.

you can see the coldplate and spacer there.

Those bulk stamped copper shims have shorted out the bridges on some processors. They do not fit properly, they can move slightly around and touch the bridges, they are not uniform in thickness and do not touch the heat sink totally. The original ones were hand made and laped to uniform thickness..and did a good job of heat transfer.
