I got a new 9500 NP from newegg today and I was shocked at how much potential the card has.

The first thing I tried was the software 8 pipeline mod. Success, 3d mark runs flawlessly. Next I played around with core speeds until I maxed the powerstrip slider @ 368 MHz. The card still performed without artifacting. Since more is never enough I uninstalled powerstrip; reinstalled it and moved the slider even higher. The core maxed out at 370 or 375 with minor artifacting. I already had a 1u heatsink I used on my previous card so I decided to stick it on this one. To my surprise the golden orb style cooler used silver thermal goop. No wonder stock cooling let me go so high. I whipped out some mounting hardware, squirted a dab of AS3 on the core and watched with eyes wide open. I’m now running 3d Mark 2003 with core at 385 MHz and no artifacting! 390 MHz gives minor artifacts so I didn’t bother testing at that speed. About the ram… The first thing I noticed about the card was its ram. Instead of the normal 3.3ns infineon I have been seeing lately, this card sported 3.0ns infineon. With a little airflow from surrounding fans the infineon will run perfectly stable at 325 MHz (650 DDR). Any higher MHz and I get big jaggies. I’m now happily running 385 core, 325 Mem for a 3d mark score of 5344!

For a non game inspired motherboard I don’t think this is too bad. Here are my specs:

Radeon 9500 non pro from newegg
MSI K7D master L Dual Socket A
Dual XP1700s @ 2450 MHz 1.7v 17x144 watercooled
1 GB Mushkin DDR very aggressive timings
120 GB WD 8 MB cache drive
Plextor CDRW
400 Watt Antec PSU

Here is the heatsink on my old card sans fan.

I'll get my 3d Marks posted online after a little more tweakin.

Isn't it cool and amazing........

Get a $135 card that scores 11k stock, do some stuff to it and score 17k if ya get a good one.

Ya, that's fun as hell watchin in disbelief as your scores go to the moon.

The heatsink fan combo is very nice. I only wish the groove for the clip werent there. I'll try and get a pic of the heatsink with the blue fan on. The best part is the sink wth a 10mm fan only takes up 1 PCI slot with room to breath.

yeah, this card overclocks like a monster. Although my card(s) failed to softmod, I got my most recent one up to 385 Core/325 Memory on a 24 hour 3DMark marathon with no hiccups. I recently slapped a Swiftech peltier unit and some ramsinks on there so I'm hoping to squeeze out a little more. Congrats on your successful mod :).

nice mod man

are the built by ati rady 9500np the ones to look for? or is any 3rd party that makes the card good? for ex. the powercooler 9500np

Saphire red pcb cards wtih L memmory layout. Newegg has them in stock for $141 shipped! Nota all the cards mod but even if they dont you still have an awsome card.

Method Man let me know how the peltier works out. I have a few peliters so I might give it a try.

Ooooh.. Very jelious of the 3.0ns RAM. My 9500->9800 has the 3.3ns ram, so I'm having trouble running 325mhz RAM with stock cooling, but i'm throwing some ramsinks on today, so I'll see what happens after that! My current 3dmark2k1 is 16665, but hopefully I'll break 17k with some more cooling.

In any case, sweet card you have there, and happy clocking!

Will do. I'll post pictures and benchmarks tomorrow *crosses fingers*. My computer has been out of commission for about 3 weeks now thanks to RMAs and idiotic mistakes by yours truly. I can't wait to see what this puppy'll do :D

Ok, with the peltier on, I got it up to 420 Core/325 Memory and I'm still testing. So far, it looks pretty stable :D. More later...

Hey Method, is your pelt on air, or water? And what ratings does it have?

I am thinking of doin that too, so just curious what your setup is like.

It's a Swiftech MCW-50 (i think that's what it's called). 80W Pelt water cooled using my own custom built setup. Pretty neat little setup. A cool thing about this is, I think it'll help me overclock the memory more cause I can feel the coolness of the peltier seeping to the RAM and other parts of the PCB.

Ok here are the final results:

I got my core up to 425, anything more and it hard locks. With the peltier, this card's core can clock about 40 MHz more. Doesn't sound too impressive until you figure that that would roughly be an extra 300 MHz on a 3 GHz CPU. Needless to say, I'm quite happy.

As far as the memory goes, the Tweakmonster heatsinks in addition to the coldness seeping off the TEC got me an extra... (drum roll please)... 4 MHz!!! lol, that's right, I was only able to increase the clock speed to 329 from 325. I'm guessing the peltier has more to do with the increase than TM heatsinks. I wish I had done some tests without the sinks first.

Oh well, overall, I'm quite happy with the results.

I'm getting around 15,800 on 3DMark2k1. However, my IS7 motherboard is having problems with its 5/4 memory divider so my memory is really underclocked right now. For a 140 buck card, I can't complain though :).

Great job method().man! I haven’t tried 3d mark 2001 but I'll give it a try if I have time this weekend. 40 MHz is quite a nice boost. Watch out for an aircooled peltier on mine. Yeah I'll get pics to...

Believe it or not, this pic was taken while the fan was at full speed using a Nikon CoolPix 2500

This is a Dynatron 1U socket 462 heatsink. For mounting I drilled 2 holes in the sink. Mounting hardware is stuff I found solely in my basement.

Bender

Uhho what’s that on the back of my card

http://www.projectsimon.com/9500voltmod.jpg

I voltmoded the core with a trimmer so voltage can be adjusted on the fly. I used two .975k ohm resistors soldered together in series. The two resistors were then soldered in series to a 10k trimmer. I could have gone with only a trimmer but I didn’t want to go under 1.95k ohm for my minimum resistance.

Core was stable around 380 MHz before but not its artifacto free at 415 MHz!

Nice, where did you get the info on the vm Bender? I wanna do this exact same trick. Hey, I don't see the trimmers. are they under the tape? I got a few vr's sittin around that need to be put to good use. And I wan't to do only the core too.

I got the idea from XBit labs (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/radeon9700pro-overclocking.html) My vcore mod was quite a bit different but it does the same thing. I’m debating on whether to do the mem voltmod.

The one and only trimmer is half covered by the tape. I left the end untapped so I can adjust it. The .975k ohm resistors were scavenged off a PSU I got from BigRed ages and ages ago.
This is the trimmer I used.

man that is a sweet card you got there, I know people with overclocked 9700's and you are still wooping them on the 3dmark even with a slower cpu than them. I think you just helped me make up my mind on what card to get. When did you buy this card? do you think newegg would send me the same card with the 3.0ms memory if I bought it now?

Bender
07-26-03, 10:47 PM
I received 2 from newegg in the past 2 weeks and one was 3.3ns and the other 3.0ns. I think the 3.3ns ram did 315 as opposed to 325. Amazingly both cards work with the 8 pipelines with zero artifacts in any game. The new gold heatsink cards seem to clock higher because the core has genuine thermal goop instead of a pad. The core shim did not hinder my heatsink from making good contact. I was very glad I didn’t have to try removing it.

07-26-03, 11:22 PM
well I didnt like those odds and I found a refurbished SAPPHIRE 9500np on there website so I go that instead for only $111 total:) hopefully this one will be a good overclocker so I wont have to stick it on ebay:eek:

Not bad for a 150 FSB rig! I can only dream of dual channel ddr and SMP compatible games!

Warlord2 your card might still mod. My friend got a newegg refurb 9500 and it works great with all 8 pipelines. If not your bound to get more than you paid for the card on eBay.

Hey Bender, thanks for the link. S do you know where on the card to measure the VPU output voltage at?

And your running the CAT 3.6 right?

NM.......................managed to kill my awsome 9500 somehow. Did the VPU vm like yours bender. Soldering went off perfectly, took static precautions, used vr set to 2.8ohms to be on the safe side.

I don't even get a post screen.....

Checked VPU output voltage and it was dead on after the vm at just under 1.7 volts, so I don't think this is what the problem is. And I've seen cards that were damaged from over volting, and they would post/boot windows screen with heavy checkerboarded display. I get nothing? Even after removing the vm.

this sucks

Well, the bright side is that I did not do this to a $350 card :p

Yeah, I would totally do this volt mod if not for the unusual spat of bad luck I've been having recently with my computer (two dead mobos; one dead chip; two dead videocards in the last 2 months). I'm happy as a clam with my system right now so I think I'll just leave well enough alone ;).
