As I was "computing" I heard this very loud metallic POP sound. The computer instantly froze and the pc buzzer let out a long continuous beep. I ran for the switch on the back of the psu to turn it off.

The first thing that came into my head was the cpu heatspreader coming off as happened to [H] when they hit 4 ghz with phase change cooling. Well, thank goodness that didn't happen. Why I thought that I don't know. I'm using a simple watercooled setup.

Then upon closer inspection I discovered that one of the hooks around the ICH had come completely out. I'm surprised it didn't come shatter my case window, the pop was that loud. The heatsink was still hanging from the remianing hook so it did not fall onto my video card.

Instead of taking several hours to remove the motherboard and solder the hook back in place I decided to use regular epoxy. Let it sit for about a while and now I'm up and running. Lets hope it doesn't happen again.

Ho hum...

I guess I spoke too soon. I didn't let the epoxy cure long enough and the hook pulled back out ever so slowly. I didn't notice this until my computer crashed and I checked the mobo.

I glued it again and let it sit overnight without the heatsink attached. So far (12 hours) everything is OK. [Knocks on particle board desk]

Remember kids, always allow epoxy to cure long enough and WASH YOUR HANDS after using!

raskren your lucky indeed!
i had THE SAME thing happen to me on my venerable bh7..
i let it sit for like two days wracking my brain on what to do to fix it.. since i was without epoxy or glue i just stuck a tiny safety pin through the holes in the motherboard where the little plastic foot latch used to be, and bent it flush to the underside of the motherboard. then i put the regular pins off the chipset cooler through it, and voila.. all fixxed.

now if only the SECOND plastic foot that holds the other side doesnt break off....

So, one day last week I boot the computer, and when the desktop appears, I get all sorts of wierd colored vertical lines on the monitor. The text is malformed and some of the letters don't even appear. I shut down and reboot and the same thing happens again. I wonder if my vid card is going out on me, but it's practically brand new. I am prepared to RMA the vid card when it happens again after the third boot.

When I opened my case, I am astonished to see the BH7 nb HS laying across the tiny resistors on the backside of the vid card, you know, the ones directly opposite the GPU. The darn thing was shorting the resistors. I am lucky something didn't fry. The hook had pulled free from the mobo. I decided that I was taking no chances, so I re-soldered the hook back into place with a dollop of solder about the size of a pea on each pin. For good measure I added a drop of solder to the other hook as well. If it pulls out again, then I may have to fire up the welding torch.

I guess I'm lucky that I heard it come loose. I have a windowed case, but I don't examine the innards that closely that often. It could have been left dangling there for days possibly frying the northbridge.
