I have an iPod (Windows version - the older 5 gigger). Recently, it died, so I went to the Apple store in soho and they replaced it on warranty. While I was at the store, I played around with several of the Apple computers/peripherals on display. Then I noticed something. The older iPods are COMPLETELY GONE! The new iPods got the spiffy cradle, requires a new case, etc. In fact, even the remote control they sell now doesn't work with the older iPods. I know, because I tried buying one. Although there was NO warning on the box at all that it wouldn't work on the older iPods, I was fortunate enough to get someone at the cash register who was astute enough to notice I had the old version. It is almost like the old iPod has been blotted out of existance. None of the newer accessories work with the old iPod :(.
My question is: does Apple treat all their hardware this way? Being a PC user, I'm used to everything being backwards compatible and feeling safe knowing that although my hardware may become obsolete, I can still safely upgrade and use my stuff until I'm good and ready to update my hardware. I really like some of the new stuff for the iPod but I'm sure as hell not going to plunk down another $300 to replace an MP3 player I bought only 7 months ago. Needless to say, I'm a bit troubled by this revelation. I'm gonna try to call Apple to see if they have any of the older remotes in stock but one of the employees at the Apple Store said, "don't hold your breath."
