I have an iPod (Windows version - the older 5 gigger). Recently, it died, so I went to the Apple store in soho and they replaced it on warranty. While I was at the store, I played around with several of the Apple computers/peripherals on display. Then I noticed something. The older iPods are COMPLETELY GONE! The new iPods got the spiffy cradle, requires a new case, etc. In fact, even the remote control they sell now doesn't work with the older iPods. I know, because I tried buying one. Although there was NO warning on the box at all that it wouldn't work on the older iPods, I was fortunate enough to get someone at the cash register who was astute enough to notice I had the old version. It is almost like the old iPod has been blotted out of existance. None of the newer accessories work with the old iPod :(.

My question is: does Apple treat all their hardware this way? Being a PC user, I'm used to everything being backwards compatible and feeling safe knowing that although my hardware may become obsolete, I can still safely upgrade and use my stuff until I'm good and ready to update my hardware. I really like some of the new stuff for the iPod but I'm sure as hell not going to plunk down another $300 to replace an MP3 player I bought only 7 months ago. Needless to say, I'm a bit troubled by this revelation. I'm gonna try to call Apple to see if they have any of the older remotes in stock but one of the employees at the Apple Store said, "don't hold your breath."

Yup, its the beautiful truth :D Say bubye to Apple's standard floppy, SCSI, old ADC, OS 9 support on new machines, serial ports, and on and on.

Apple generally kicks out the old hardware. This allows them to build superior machines because they dont have to build legacy support into their hardware. Generally speaking, you can get some adapter or workaround to get your legacy hardware/software to work, but expect to keep up with the new stuff. The new remote probably doesn't work with the older iPod b/c they probably didn't build the functionality into the older iPod.

This is a good thing. Who actually used floppy drives? Every Mac comes with a standard CDRW. A lot of problems PC's have can be traced back to legacy hardware or support.

Wej, have you ever seen one in person? The iPods are sooo nice. They have no moving parts, all the buttons are the same touch sensors as laptops.

You could always paint it :D

Well, I found a remote for the older iPod on ebay. I must say, I am quite disappointed with Apple on this. I think the iPod is a great product but support like this is seriously making me reconsider ever buying an Apple product again...
