I will be ordering a Tbird 900 later this week... I was wondering if any of them come unlocked from AMD?

I'd really like to get one of those :-)

If they do, do you have any idea what the odds of getting one are?

Thanks,

After reading posts on maybe 10 different forums for 2 months, I would venture that getting an unlocked 900 is slim to none. There were damn few unlocked processors made that went outside of the reviewing community. A few came from Dresden Germany in the blue core jobs, but even these were few and far inbetween.

The new 266 mhz 1.2 processors are reported to be unlocked, but I would still check that out at the time of ordering, if it was me...and that feature was important enough. This seems reasonable tho...as the only thing that was done to the older 100 mhz cpu's was to do the pencil trick so that they would be able to run at 133 fsb.

Have a good day

Odds on a factory unlocked chip? Slim to none. It seems to be only the higher speed chips (1 GHz plus) that are coming factory unlocked. But with pencils and defogger repair kits and conductive pens, who the he!! cares? As long as you have a decently steady hand, give the manual unlocking a go. if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. I have pencil tricked 1 Tbird and 4 or 5 Durons with a 100% success rate. The instances of frying chips are few and far between. I say "Cast off multiplier locking with confidence!!"

Long Live AMD, the T-Bird, and the Duron.

I'm not worried about doing it myself, or scared I'll mess it up... I'm just lazy <g>

Well, I've read the rest of the responses saying slim to none, but that may not be altogether true. I've read several posts on different boards from people getting unlocked 850 and 900MHz chips online and at local shops. I'm picking up a 900 Tbird at a local shop today, and I know the guy there pretty well, going to have him rummage through his Tbirds and see if he has one unlocked. If not, no big deal, but it would be pretty cool to snag one that's unlocked from AMD. Will post my findings when I come back from lunch...

Thanks,
