I am a total network newbie.

I have read the linky's and read as much as I can, but I'm totaly stuck.

I set it up on both machine's using the wizard and I have them connected with NIC and a "crossover" cable. The connection light is lighted and I have seen the TX light flash, but I can't connect to the internet.

Also I don't know how to see what's on my network group. I need help there too.

I can't afford to get router and such.

Can some one please help me "step-by-step" to get this darn thing running.

Thank's.

I will write a good guide in a minute. Hang on while I boot XP....

I found these guides (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics) for various versions of Windows. I use a router, so I'm not sure how much help they may be.

Ok. :)

Get to Control Panel. There, click "Network connections". You should see your Network card there, right-click on it and go to Properties.

There, look for "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". If it isn't there, go to Install (the button near) and add a Protocol. It will be there.

Now, at TCP/IP, press Properties. You need to have an IP adress for each computer. Click the option "Use the following IP adresses" Try 192.168.7.101 for one computer and for the other, 192.168.7.102

You also need DNS adresses (where it says Subnet Mask). Try 255.255.255.0 for both.

Press "ok".

Now go to Control Panel, click on System, then Computer Name (it's a tab called "Computer name" near the top).

Click on "Change".

Computer name: "Overclock1" or anything similar :), and make a workgroup for it, something like "Crossover".

Press "OK". Done :)

Repeat on the other computer but use a different IP adress and a different computer name for the other machine. Keep the DNS adresses and the workgroup the same.

Good luck :D
