So I'm trying to run an old game off a dos boot disk on a laptop with win XP installed. I wiped the drive and converted it to FAT from NFTS and then reinstalled XP.

I can into dos from a win95 bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com, but I cant get it to reconize the cdrom drive to try and run the install.

Any one have any suggestions?

Keep in mind all of the dos files must be supplied by download and bootdisks, as I dont have an actual copy of dos anymore.

I'm not sure if your boot disk has a universal cd rom driver in it, but that could be the problem. If your probly is not recognizing it i would advise looking for a more advanced boot disk.

If it recognizes it but doesnt let you change directory into the cd rom then use the prompt command to get in.

prompt cd

cd: d:

prompt

then ull be in d

and u can run the setup file

***i think, its been awhile =P***

I believe MS DOS is now open source.

Try this site... http://falcon.jmu.edu/~jarvislb/utils/boot_cd.html for a bootable floppy with cd support.

With most retail cd-roms that I have bought I have gotten a driver disc on floppy for it. You may want to check your drives manufacturer for a driver for your cd-rom.

If it is a Windows 95 book disk then it should ask you if you want to run the computer with cd rom support.

but then again it may be a custom bootdisk it may not have the driver.

Here is the link for an OEM Windows 98 bootdisk from Bootdisk.com

http://utils.skull-tech.com/bootdisks/boot98.exe

It does state that it has a CD-ROM driver

Disco - Are you using a USB mouse? Set Legacy USB to enabled to use your mouse in DOS. If you're using a PS2 mouse, then you might need a new one.

Forgot it was a laptop :)

Just use the <tab> and arrow keys. That's what I do when I reinstall on my thinkpad. My pointer mouse never works in dos.

http://cutemouse.sourceforge.net/

thats the link for cutemouse

never tried it but:

"CuteMouse is a DOS based, open source mouse driver, which supports many protocols of serial and PS/2 mice. It can search for a serial mouse at all COM ports or only at a specified port.
An important CuteMouse feature is its small memory footprint: the resident part (TSR) occupies less than 3.5K. CuteMouse can also install itself in upper memory, when available, without requiring external utilities such as the DOS 'lh' (loadhigh) command. "
