It's here! It's Here! That sure was fast...

When I got home from work yesterday, my new 650 T-bird was sitting on the porch, beckoning me. "Hey sailor, wanna OC?"

I pulled out my old Duron and threw it in the T-bird shipping holder, rather disrespectfully. It scowled at me, like an old flame who felt used. "Hey, I'll call you. Okay?"

Four dots of conductive paint, squeegie of AS and away we go!

"Think I'll start off at 1.7V / 650 Mhz and take it from there." Awright! Boy this baby sure runs cooler than the Duron. (Duron scowling at me from the shelf).

Okay, how about 700?

"WooHoo!"

750?

"WooHoo!"

800?

"Doh!" 1.75V "Doh!" 1.80V "WooHoo!"

"Boy those fans sure change pitch when I run P95!"

"Warning! Warning, Will Robinson!"

Okay, the 300W no-name PS is holding regulation, though +5 now +4.95. No serious switching noise. Exhaust air from PSU not hot.

Back to business...

850?

"Doh!" 1.85V "Doh!" 1.9V "WooHoo!"

"Hey, I'm out core voltage headroom! Doh!"

It sure takes a lot more core voltage to get the same OC frequency. It is also obvious that the T-bird sucks a lot more current. Idle temp still less than Duron ( Duron now laughing at me from shelf) but when stressed it skyrockets +10 to 12C. Doh! Still only in the 30s though.

Looks like a few trim pots and a voltage mod for the KT7 this evening, but it worries me to need to go beyond 1.9Vcore.

Afterthought footnote:

When I was working my Duron up to its 10x100, it would always post and load Win ME okay. If I was "over the line", it would fail Prime95 torture. With this T-bird, whenever it was "over the line", it would not load Win ME. Never got to trying Prime95. Definitely a different stability impact.

Could my memory timing requirements have changed by switching CPUs? I have not changed them from the Duron settings, namely everything to max speed.

The V I/O is still set at 3.4V and holding reglation just fine.

Things I tried last night:
Added additional filtering capacitance to +5. Nope
Added additional filtering capacitance to Vcore. Nope
Added additional filtering capacitance to +3.3. Nope

Failure seemed linked directly to CPU load. While Win was booting, it would go okay until some intensive process began and then it would fail. You can hear the CPU activity reflected in the fan whine. That is why I though that perhaps it was a PSU issue and tried the additional capacitance.

Any "pearls of wisdom"???

How about a wild guess? Surely, with the experience base of this group, someone must have an opinion or gut feeling.

sorry, but all I have is a question: How does the load on the CPU affect the pitch of the fan?

It could be over-taxing the power supply, which in turn will limit the power going to the fans, thus creating a different pitched fan.

The +12 runs around 11.97V measured with a Fluke multimeter. During heavy loading of the PS, it actually goes up to 12.08V. The 68 cfm Delta fan on my Swiftech MC-462A heatsink is very sensitive to voltage in terms of the RPM it develops and subsequent pitch of the whine.
