View Full Version : Need some help to get higher FSB...

This is the first rig in my sig. I'm currently stuck at 150 on my FSB (which compared to everyone else, stinks). I was running at 164 at one time, but when I rebooted I had no video, so I reset and started from the beginning. Basically my problem lies there. Every time I try to get above the 150 I'm at now, my video doesn't come up. I overclock the way that is described in the overclocking FAQ's (up all voltages, find stable FSB, then back voltages doen till failure, go back to last stable volatages). I also notice that the minute I change my multiplier on my CPU-even if the FSB is stock 133-I get the same problem. Basically, what I'm trying to find out is whether or not this is a video card problem (yes, it's older) or if it's something like the memory not being very good. I'm banging my head against the wall here people :bang head. Please help!

If I found the right manual, you have two jumpers on the motherboard which set the default fsb. You might try setting them to default to 166.

SW1 jumper 1 & 2 pins (same as 133)

SW2 jumper 2 & 3 pins (1 & 2 for 133)

i think graphic is right...when u switch the jumpers you change the agp/pci bus ratio and therefore can get a higher oc...i had this same problem...try changing the jumpers according to the mobo manual

The only KT3 manual that I found on the MSI website (Taiwan) was for the KT3M and not the Ultra2 which may be jumperless.

athlon 2200 chips are crap for overclocking, ditch it and get a 1700+ tbred

they are good if u have good cooling and a b-core 2200+ with crap cooling mine was running faster than my current 1700+dlt3c the speed in my sig is wrong b/c i had some problems today and cant get my speeds back up... its currently at 2200 mhz and my 2200+ was at 2227 not much of a difference but that was the most i could get stable outa the chips with this crappy hs/f

Any ideas about the video not working problem? What could be the reason for that? I have my AGP voltage at the highest setting, 2.8. Also, is there anything I have to do to the chip? I thought TBred's were already unlocked and you could run any multiplier on them...say I wanted to drop to an 11x and run 185 FSB?

I expect that your video problems are due to the setting of the fsb/agp/pci divider. At 133 fsb, you have a 4:2:1 divider, but if you keep this divider setting at 150 fsb, the AGP port is running at 75MHz and the pci bus is running at 37.5MHz (both are getting to be borderline for many cards). If your board has a 5:2:1 divider option, use it to go up to around 185 fsb.

Also, about dropping your multiplier to 11, this may not be possible since the 2200+ is a default 13.5 multiplier and as such you are probably limited to the high range of multipliers (above 12.5x) without doing some bridge modifications to the chip.

I was on MSI's web site. It says that the latest BIOS update supports up to 166 MHz FSB. I would assume that means it has a 1/5 divisor? I could theoretically set it at 166 FSB and it might work if I up the voltage all the way. You don't suppose it's my memory do you? I need to get one of those (is it Epox?) boards that has the PCI lock. I don't think the 8KHA+ I have has it?

Any of the nForce2 boards have a pci lock as its is a feature of the chipset, not the board manufacturer.

There should be a way to select the divider in your bios (there may not be, but it SHOULD be there). Also if your board has a dram timing of "By SPD" then use it. This will force your memory to run at its manufacturer specified speed.

You might try 12.5x166 or 13x166 and see if it will boot. The bios may be dumb and not use the 5:2:1 divider until you reach 166 and not one MHz before.

I knew about the wire trick, I just didn't feel like ripping my whole computer apart again in order to do it, but if I must. I'm gonna try just setting the 166FSB first and see if that works. I don't recall every seeing a divisor specification in my BIOS, I guess I have to look harder.

I hear ya on that one.

I bought a new board yesterday and stripped down 3 systems to build one Beefy system and my network is in shambles at the moment.

I am conscidering the wire trick on my XP sytem. Looks like a lot of people are getting 2.5 Ghz from their 1700+ Xp's
