View Full Version : A few questions for you l337 people about a K6-2 300...
First of all, I have a 300mHz K6-2. I've overclocked it to a 350, just by raising the multiplier to 3.5X (from 3.0X). When I tried 4.0X however, I got into Windows, but I got a blue screen of death trying to load a Quake 3 map. I restarted, and then I got a BSOD in Windows.
Obviously, my CPU isn't stable at 400mHz. Now. -->What I want to know is what is the original voltage of a 300 mHz K6-2.<-- My mobo is set to Auto-Detect, and I don't quite know. What I also want to know is, whether raising the voltage just a wee bit will let me run at 400mHz. I know that K6-2's are picky about this (the voltage being too low I mean). Is this a good idea, and how high should I set it compared to the original one?

The fact that you got 50 MHz out of that chip w/o raising the voltage is incredible.... standard core voltages on K6-2's are 2.2 or 2.4 volts. Check on the chip to see which it is. if you're on a 2.2 volt core chip, good news, a slight raising of vcore will get you to 400 or maybe even 425 MHz. I ran my K6-2 at 2.8 volts vcore just to get it to 560, from 500 stock. just make sure you have adequate cooling if you go that high, which means more than your average 50 MM K6-2 HSF unit. Good luck

I had a 300 and a 450. My 300 overclocked to 350 without a voltage increase, and could get it up to 450 stable with 2.5V. Think it was 2.3V originally.

I used to have a K6-2 300 that did 450 with 2.4V.
Just goes to show you that all those idiots that say K6-Xs don't OC very well are wrong. It was just that steppings made a bigger difference with Socket7 AMDs than it did with s370 Celerons.
Thanks dude. I'll try changing my voltage just a notch higher when I get home. I'm at school right now, supposed to be designing a house or something in AutoCAD. :)
Now my measly 300mhz will run at a still measly 400mhz. :P
Oh yeah. One more thing.
If I plan to raise the voltage, my cooling should be good as someone mentioned. I've got a heatsink thats pretty fat (1.5 inches) and I guess the fan is pretty good too. I've got a nice thin layer of thermal compound applied between the CPU and heatsink. I also have 2 case fans (intake and exhaust).
Is that "adequate" cooling? I wouldn't know because I'm not going to buy one of those fancy thermometer things. :P I just touch my heatsink, if it's warm it's ok, if the mofo burns me, something isn't ok.
I ran my OC'ed 300 (at 350 now) for 8 hours doing the Prime95 torture test. It just got slightly warmer. Nothing big. So is my cooling adequate?

I respectfully disagree, and I will stick by the statement that In General, the K6-X's were poor oveclockers. There may have been limited exceptions to this as you stated with the correct stepping. Of the 6 300-500 K6-2 and K6-3's that I used, only one would achieve a 50 MHz overclock, and that was with +0.5V over default and good cooling.
In fact, this thread is by far the most positive K6-X overclocking thread I have ever seen. Begs the question, where were all you folks hiding earlier?

used to be that about 75% of my posts were re: K6-2 OC, until I got my Duron. If you look at all my posts prior to February 10th or so, they were all K6-2 or Geforce 2 MX related. I don't think I was "hiding," but I apologize to anyone I may have deprived of useful info. Socket7 overclocking has certainly gotten a bad rap in this forum (many replies state "Get a Tbird/duron" or "it's no use") but in all reality there are a lot of people out there that still use K6-X based systems. I would certainly say at my college that processors (in order from most common to least) go like this: Celeron, K6-X, P3, Duron, Athlon. (among owners of newer PC's at least, there are a crudload of people using 486's and Pentium 1's still) So from what I can tell, K6-X owners are kinda getting the shaft because there area lot of them. Can't we all just get along?? :-)

Ok. So thanks about your opinions on what kind of overclockers K6-2's make.
My question still hasn't been answered :)

Believe I covered the voltage problem - remove your chip and check what's imprinted on it. That's your default voltage. To get your chip overclocked, if it's not getting into windows or is unstable, increase your vcore in small increments until it's stable. Make sure to watch your temps, you dont want to exceed 46 or 47 C.

W00t!
I just raised the voltage to 2.3V from the original 2.2V, and everything seems to be fine at the moment. I ran Quake 3 and it didn't crash, Windows 2000 isn't crashing, etc. etc.
I'll run a torture test for like 8 hours and see if it's completely stable. Thanks a lot everyone who posted here.

K6-2 and K6-3 Suckz a Lot for Games!!! and... in Brasil HardWare is Very Expensive!!! If you can buy a GeForce Ultra for something like a U$360 we get the same GeForce Ultra for Something Like R$900!!! U$ 1 = R$ 2,20 or something like that... Brazil dont have many Coolers!!! the best here... ThermalTake!!! But Brazil Chickz is VERY GOOD!!!
