I am new to overclocking, How do i overclock my computer...
AMD K6 500, Gigabyte GA-5AX (ALi chipset)
I have changed the multiplyer to 5.5 and it will not boot, how do I change the FSB, do I need to change the voltage from 2.2 to 2.4? could someone explain what I need to do please. I would like 550mhz if possible.

Thanks

You can do FSB overclocking, as well as Multiplyer change. For this you will have to take care of cooling and a good voltage management. Cryptic, huh?

Go to the homepage, and read the Beginners guides section by Daniel Edgar. All of the basics and things you need to be aware of are over there. Your board allows basic OC'ing like I've explained above. You can search some deeper in the AMD CPU section, some more days ago, there are some topics about AMD K6 oc'ing. Remember to do your homework, mind your temps and add thermal past if you don't use it! If you have questions then, be my guest, I'll be happy to help you further!
Succes!

Thanks for you offer of help, I have tried the multipliers at 5.5X and the
system would not boot into windows.
The FSB overclock is confusing me a bit, I have also read that the chip might
run better set to 2.4v. I am just looking to get it at 550mhz. If you could
describe what I need to do please, Thanks.(AMD500K62, 2.2V, PC100SDRAM, GA-5AX,

You say you have multiplyer to 5.5, you WILL post, but WON'T boot into windows? Well, if so, this is a crystal clear example of sys. instability. This is easily solved by increasing your core voltage untill you find satisfying results.

You know how to change voltage? Let me warn you of the possible consequences: more voltage = more heat produced by your CPU. Be sure your heatsink can deal with it. Do you have the ability to measure your CPU temp? Adding a thermistor on the heatsink near the core will do, but not between core and heatsink so heat can't go away good anymore. Temps are not to go above 50°C, your CPU won't like that and besides won't run very stable. What kind of heatsink do you use, does it perform well and DO you use thermal grease? It's mandatory for a good heat transfer, normaly it's in place. Never run a CPU and heatsink without grease!

Too high temps will cause your CPU to burn, just stay below 50°C (permanently), everything will be fine, in most of the cases all you will experience is a hang-up at high temp (higher temp = less stable, linearly!!! my experience). Don't apply idiotic voltages, just 0.1V more, but be carefull with more, 0.2V. I haven't done much research on the K62, but I guess it's pretty much the same as athlon. I have mine (1.6V standard) running 1.8V all the time, 33°C. Sometimes 1.85 or 1.9V when I bore myself and play with my PC (never liked dolls anyway)LOL. Even done 2.0V for amoment, it scared the hell out of me, I won't do it again, sys won't boot at 875, even at 2.0V, 30°C.

I think the 0.1V extra will do the job for you, just a little setting in the BIOS menu. If you don't know how it works, be sure to read your manual, in BIOS you can screw up things real well!!! FSB overclocking sucks, so forget it for a while. Maybe nice if this fails, but it won't 8)
Succes! Have fun.

And thanks for mailing me, it's the best way to get my attention anyway, as I won't be notified of updates in the tread, something I asked for, but couldn't be done (yet). Just got into me that some mobo's don't have voltage settings in the BIOS menu, some only have jumpers. In that case, just see your mobo manual on how to set jumpers on voltage. For if you lost your manual, their all online, at the website of the company who made the mobo.

Enjoy!

I am running a K6-2 500 at 500 right now(my GHZ Athlon is temporarily out of comission) I had to raise the core volts from 2.2 upto 2.3 and it works fine. Just watch the temps and you should be ok.my goal is to run this thing at 600 until I get my other one up and running again(bad bios flash killed it). From what I understand the K6-2 is an "ok" overclocker and I havent seen many people get more than 50 mhz out of them.
