View Full Version : Non overclocked 2.4c not stable?
Hello all,
I have an Abit IC7, 2.4C, Dual Channel DDR400. All new components. I put it together and overclocked a little, but it gets too hot. So I backed down to 200Mhz and tried to run torcher test in Sandra and Prime, but my CPU is still overheating. Anyone know what the deal is? Btw, I have not tweaked the voltage and just flashed my BIOS. Is the CPU defective, or do I just need a good HSF?
Thanks,
neog ;)

how hot is "so hot?" abits are notorious for overreporting heat... you didn't give us your temps.
the answer to your second question, "yes" get the best heatsink and fan that you can afford and or tolerate to listen to if you want to do serious overclocking.
Is your hsf sit down correctly? When in bios in health monitor, check the cpu temp and at the same time try to push down the heatsink. If the temp changes values quickly, you found the problem.
Hello,
Sorry. Temps as reported by the winbond software that came with the board are about 50c idle. When i run stress test in sandra the cuttoff was at 60c. That's where I drew the line. Probably would have overheated more if I let it.
So, I went out today and got a Thermaltake? HSF. It's better. about 45c idle and between 56c & 58c with the fan at full blast. I did notice that the winbond s/w always reports higher temps than sandra does after a burn in. Sandra says average temp is 36c, but shuts down (i think it does anyway because it only gets to run 2 or 3 then posts the stats with the yellow caution that says CPU cooling system thermal resistance. So sandra is set at 60c but my average temp is 36c? what's up with that?
Anyway, I am new to this as you have already guessed, so please bear with me. Is there a temp offset with this board? Is the board bad? Is the chip bad?
Thanks for the help.

that's not too bad now. you have a better hs/fan and your temps are in reason especially for an abit mobo with winbond monitoring. the thermaltake wont take you as far as its almost namesake, "thermalright" but the 900u is alot more expensive. your current temps should allow you to overclock to a reasonably high number!;)

I've got a 2.6c oced to 3ghz and on an Abit IC7 board. I got me a sparky 7 (thermaltake) and I got 42C idle and it gets up to 54-56 100% load with that winbound program that came with the abit driver cd. Which exact hsf did you get? btw, my sandra says 42C and it says my cpu fan is 7000 rpm but the box says 6000
check the NSF for proper seating as stated in a previous post. . . .I had exactly the same issue tho in MY case i was a lil too skimpy with the heat sink compound. . .once correctedc never saw idle temps about 38c
Hi again,
I disabled the cpu throttling and jacked the cpu up to 3 ghz. Don't ask me but things are running better now. Temp is 44c idle. I keep the fan at about 4400 rpm so under load temp was 59-62c. Is that OK?
I'm having a problem I think with my memory now. It's two 256 sticks of geil dual channel ddr400. Sometimes when I run mem bandwith in sandra, it says the program has experienced problems and must be shut down. I was running the mem at
2-6-3-3 (the order in bios), & 2.8v is this the correct settings? I tried 2.5 cas as well. Right now i'm trying 3cas. Any ideas?
Thanks so much for the help!!
How did you disable the throttling?
First of all, even if you can do that, it woudn't be a good idea. The throttling is there to protect your chip. Without it you could wind up with a small blackened pile of silicon that smells funny.
Also, I believe that the throttling is controlled by the processor itself and is independent of the motherboard and any BIOS settings. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I disabled it under the pc health settings. The HSF i bought has a fan control so I thought this would not be a big deal.
I'm still having problems with programs encountering problems. Can anyone advise? thanks.
Oh, you disabled the thermal control on the fan, not the thermal control on the processor.
