Athlon 750 slot A or athlon 700 Slot a (edit) or 800, ( classic )
i dont want the thunderbird version as my mobo only accepts up to 700 with the thunderbird version...so then i will not be able to overclock

The Freaky Problem

okay..a friend of mien bought a mother board and a slot a athlon 750, he wants me to put in his sys..take out his 450 K6-2...well the prob is this when windows goes to load it brings up the registure checker or fixer whatever...well after it does this it does it again, and again after the pc restarts..well even if u hit exit and it goes to load windows it just quits or it does some really dumb stuff like give u a green screen or some stupid error with the config.sys file

well when i stick my 550 athlon ( it has the caseing off of it) it will come up fine..i mean it will go into windows and work great...so i stuck his 750 in my mobo..SoYo K7VIA....i get the same **** thing....put when i put my 550 back in it works fine...i did get into windows once with the 750 but then win 98 se said some like " ur registry is screwed and i will fix it" well after that i couldnt get into windows with the 750 and then when i stuck my 550 back in it went into windows...only i get "Explore has caused and illegal operation and will be shutdown" everysingel time i get into windows...i cant even get into windows with safemode....ugh...well i reinstalled windows...it didnt help at all....so what the HELL is going on????? oh well im using a k62 500 pc i that i still have..not to good for gameing....so i may not get a 750 anyway

BTW its a 750 athlon classic thats cursed

If you're getting registry errors with it in both machines, which work fine otherwise, that'd suggest the cpu as being the cause of the problem. It almost sounds as though the cpu's being oc'ed and can't take it, with those random registry errors - there's a slight chance it could be remarked, seeing as it's a slot a, but it's unlikely. My advice would be to return the cpu and get it replaced - I'd have thought that'd sort it out, if it doesn't just post again and maybe someone else will have a different idea :-)
