Windows update had a new audio driver, "NVIDIA Corporation multimedia software update released on June 17 2003.*"

So I went ahead and downloaded and installed it.

It broke my audio--no sound in windows XP

Funny thing is, I can put in a game CD and sound works fine.

Also, if I disable audio in bios my USB mouse won't work.

I tried a Windows repair then reinstall SP1 and NVidia driver pack but it still doen't work.

Anyone run into this before and know how to fix it W/O reformatting?

Thanks

Update

OK, I figured it out.

I downloaded and installed Windows updated audio driver again.

Rebooted.

Went to hardware manager and updated driver for ACPI from specific location > Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC.

Rebooted.

Windows found new hardware and needed to reboot again.

Went to Multi Media Control Panel and changed:
Sound Playback > NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio
Sound Recording > same
MIDI Music Playback > DLS Synthesizer

Somehow everything in the multi media control panel had been changed to playback thru the modem!!!

Now I gotta go download al the critical updates again. I guess when I did the windows repair it wrote over all that stuff...

Live and Learn huh.

I have to give credit to THIS site for the useful info that set me in the right direction.
