My mom is being extremely ghetto. Shes threatening to take away my computer if "she catches me folding." Too bad my computer has more passwords than most banks, and she doesnt know her way around it. But, she said that Folding At Home is used for cloning...

She got this idea from where you ask? A RELIGIOUS MAGAZINE! I cant stand them. Everything to them is BAD, or used for "playing god." Sometimes I wish they would just shut up! Theyre all Blanket statements about everyone in a religious group are not allowed, especially negative ones like these. -nihili RAH!

I dont fold anymore anywayz becuase it makes my room really hot, but when she said that, I think im going to start folding again.

Im done ranting. Flame me all you want.
Flaming is never allowed here, please don't ask for it. -nihili

Just tell her it is OK, that you understand people are afraid of stuff they do not understand:eek: And if she wants to learn more about the research that is being done and the good that can come from it you will be happy to show her:D

Ditto.

I couldnt find anything on google, but it doesnt mean the article aint on the net somewhere, I might not of worded it correctly or something, I can tell you I couldnt find it on focus on the family.(im hoping that wasnt the mag it was coming from.)Also maybe she read that it could possibly be used for that, but nothing stanford ever stated, if so, I will still be folding, there is something bad in everything, nothing is perfect. Im sure the place your mom works for have done some things wrong, but that doesnt mean she will quit the job.

Guys lets be very careful how far we take this thread... Religion can be a very touchy subject and I strongly suggest we dont get into it further.

I agree.

If you just replace christian with "black" or "homeless" or "female", how long do you think this thread would last?

Or is christianity the only bashable religion now?

cp

No religion is bashable on these forums, nor are any of the other groups you mentioned. If you see someone doing it, PM a mod. -nihili

Hang on, It's not the fact that we are bashing religion and nik has a point. The issue here is people getting half the story and drawing a conclusion. Now F@H might arrive at a result that could one day aid cloning research but it's a very long shot. And remember medicinal cloning research is deemed acceptable by many denominations, including mine. Certain cloning research is still legal and supported by most "western" governments. It's not anti-religion, in fact all it this pushes is more ignorance. Let's shine lights on knowledge.

Ah whatever, i'll forgive their ignorance ;)

Again I ask, If I replace christians in his post with the word black, or female, or gay for that matter, how long would the post last?

I cant stand gay people, I cant stand black people, I wish they would shut up.

cp

Removed the quote and I'm assuming that the second paragraph is merely an example of what offensive speech looks like, not a slam in itself.

Cp, please keep it unemotional (KlowD9x too ;) )

I think what he is aiming his vitriol at is people who have closed judgements used using half a story, or using little or no thinking. Remember it doesn't say anywhere in scripture, nor in christian doctrine, that All cloning is inherently bad. Yes it could have been badly worded, but there's no need to keep draggin it out in public.

it wouldnt last long, gay would be deleted almost immediately. Black would come in close second, i think.

Please chill cp, i am christian to and it only offended me slightly.

This doesnt have anything to do with my oringal post. I was talking about how someone said it could be used for cloning. Now how my thread would be deleted becuase I said christian.

Yes, but I still find it annoying that it's ok with the moderators to post his original post. I am not politically correct, believe me. But anybody else in that post who is being singled out for they're religious beliefs, and the post wouldnt last.

If you have a problem with a post hit the report this post button and let a moderator take care of it. I can see where you are coming from and I can also see what he meant. I would hope in the future he takes a little more time to consider his words before he posts next time.

Alas, mods don't always see every thread as soon as it appears. Especially when we're busy putting out other fires.

THe blanket derogatory reference to Christians is innappropriate. I'll go through and clean it up. It's ok to denounce ignorance. It's not ok to imply that one particular relgious/racial/etc. group is more ignorant than the others.

So keep the topic to ignorance, and not religion.

How about substituting ignorant people for Christians?
As previously stated, there are many Christians who have no quarrel with folding. And there are certainly people who aren't Christian that are against cloning, and so probably have a gripe with FAH as well.

If you want to have a pro/anti Christian debate, try www.sciforums (com) .

I'm not linking to there because some there use language that isn't allowed here, just as they argue/discuss/debate issues that aren't allowed here.

Edit; Nihili beat me to it.

I think that if everybody (not directed to people in this thread but the population in general) realized that not everybody will like everything, Or like everyone. Things are not always fair, deal with it and move on.
I don't know who was the person the suggested that everyone can like everybody else (was probably a relegious based show that wanted a donation to help them achieve their goal :) ) but sometimes you just have to disagree and move on.

and as for the relegious aspect....

I believe in God, just not his representatives

Well i'm christian and I support cloning and folding. You mom needs to get her facts straight. Try and find out why she hates cloning. My feeling: God gives us the knowlege to clone so it must be useful and good.

EDIT: I wonder if the author could be found guilty of libel.

..But He* also gives us knowledge to develop weapons of war, but of course folding could help prolong life which is always a bonus.

Keep the fold strong guys :)

*Of course this applies if you believe in one higher being. If not you could attribute "God" to whatever belief structure you have.**

Well you could always explain that if she takes away your computer you will likly, because of lack of stuff to do turn to bad things like:
A. couch patato and get REALLY FAT and stupid.
B. Drugs.
C. Sex.
D. Drugs and Sex.
E. Other bad stuff.

About this cloning thing, I have seen somthign else that ****es me off in a similar way. Its a book this kid at work had called:
"Why Christians can't trust pshycology"
And the kid said that essentially its because it gives false hope.
Now I don't expect some of you to understand this if you are christion, but isn't somthing that is substantiated by some morederatly good testing (though still not exact) that demonstrates trends that can be proven as fact (the trends not neccisarily what they mean) a little more trustworthy, and believable than some person who cannot be seen or felt (that could be disputed I suppose), nor proven to exist, whos supposed teachings have been (assuming he did exist and the book wasnt just a well done magic show or trick/bet) put into mere humans works, translated numerous times to and from numerous different languages, and passed down for centruies. And don't start with that "wagon wheels in the red sea", "ark on the mountain stuff", thats not what is under scrutiny in my opion, that can all be explained to a reasonable lvl on logic considering the bible is almost a story and nearly all storys are subject to embelishments from their authors/tellers.

I really hate it when people don't make sense.
But all I have to say is GGGGRRRRRRrrrrrrr and now I'm done.
[/rant]

(Nihili: if I made any "Blanket statements about everyone in a religious group" please PM me so I can refrase/restate what I was trying to say rather than simply cutting it into peices.)
