I have a Adaptec AHA-2940UW Ultra2 SCSI Adapter and two 9 Gb Fugitsu drives, how do I go about making these drives into a stripe so I can have one 18 GB drive? I'm using Windows 2000 Pro

When you turn on your computer there should be a "Press F5 to configure RAID" text. Otherwise, consult your Adaptec manual.

You either have the:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/proddetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&prodkey=AHA-2944UW&cat=%2fTechnology%2fSCSI%2fSCSI+for+Servers

-or the-

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/proddetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&prodkey=AHA-2940AU&cat=%2fTechnology%2fSCSI%2fSCSI+for+Servers

Which don't support RAID.

Here are some RAID Products from Adaptec:

So I have to go Software RAID?

As long as it's not the boot drive, it can be done using disk management. Boot up and configure the adapter with the drives attached. SCSI IDs will not matter too much as long as they are not the same and neither is ID 0. You don't want either ID as 0 since the RAID is software based and can not be bootable. Once the drives are visible in windows they'll need to be converted to dynamic disks, then have the stripe configured and formatted. A bit more information is here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnntpro00/html/management.asp?frame=true

You'll probably want a faster controller as well. If it's a 2940UW and not a 2940U2W, you're looking at a bandwidth of 20-40MB/s on the 68pin channel and 20MB/s on the narrow channel(50 pin).

True RAID cards for the slower interfaces, sometimes even U160, are not that expensive anymore.

is there anyway to do software RAID and use it as a boot disk? I don't have the cash to buy any new SCSI cards

Nope. Since the OS has to load before the volume becomes active, you can't boot from it.

What kind of drive are the Fujitsus?

alright, thanx for you help... just wishful thinking there was someway around it...

I'm building a machine for video editing for a buddy, I have

P4 2.4C
2 X 256MB OCZ PC3200 Cas 2 Rev. 2 RAM
Abit IC7
Adaptec SCSI
two 9GB SCSI drives
one 80 GB WD 8 MB cache
ATi All In Wonder 9700 Pro
LG Combo drive

so my plan is to throw Win2k on one of the 9 Gb drives and use the 80 for storage... since I can't RAID the 2 SCSI drives together, not sure what to do with the other SCSI drive though

The better bet for that is going to be to partition the 80GB and use a single partition for OS. That adapter is a killer for performance. Unless you have U2W or better drives and controllers, or are running SCSI CDRWs on any rated interface, there's almost no reason to hang an adapter. Early SCSI-2 performs badly by today's standards.
