View Full Version : how do I overclock a 1GHZ Athlon???
Hi, I don't have the slightest idea in how to go about OC a 1GHZ Thunderbird. Can you master overclockers help me accomplish this?? Is there good tuts in how to do this (for a newbie)?? Or perhaps you guys can give a clear step by step process in OC'ng the cpu. Thanks for your input.
pl.s I will be using a 300w ps and a Abit KT7A-RAID mobo.
Thanks again.

The mother board you have is very good for OC'ing, one thing you will want to do is check out this site. There is so much helpful info you can find here that will answer most if not all your questions. The first thing you need to do is get yourself a good heatsink and fan, like an Alpha PAL6035 or GlobalWin Fop38 people have different preffrences. Use a good thermal grease to apply on the core of the cpu before you install the heatsink, I'm sure everyone here will recommend Artic Silver, which I totally recommend. Look through the site and see the performance test that have been done and choose from there. Then your gonna wanna do some reading on how to unlock the L1 bridges on the cpu. This can be done cheaply with a mechanical pencil but I suggest using a window defogger kits ink, or you can get a cunductive ink pen from an electronics store. I did a quick look for a url to guide you to but had no luck. Connecting the L1 bridges will allow you to adjust the clock multiplier of the cpu in the bios. Make sure you get some good memory, alot of guys use Mushkin, Kingmax, Crucial, and Tonicom. There is so much information so widely available to get you going, do your reading before you try anything, plus it will give you a general idea of what it is all about. It will make the guys replying to your newbie posts much happier.
two things you need to do to get you started first read your mb manual cover to cover twice then go to the main page and read the beginners guide information is the key ;D
I have the same setup you have, so the only thing for you to do first is to; read, read and read. Then srart trying things. Like first unlock the chip. Then start bumping it up till it goes no farther.(be sure to watch temps). But first read. Good luck and happy o\cing! Abit KT7A-Raid T-bird 1000@1233 home made watercooler. Abit KT7-Raid T-bird 1000@1144 air cooled
Thanks for the advice guys. I'm gonna get me some book learning lol, and read so I can overclock that baby.

do yourself a favour:
GET BETTER COOLING!!!
also, try to get an intake/exhaust fan to help with O'Cing. temps always come first. Get familiar with your comp.
Open it up, and be able to ID the different parts, Hard drive, RAM, etc. And also, make sure to pull the power cable, and constantly touch the PSU to ground yourself, static is your 2nd worst enemy after temps. Then do what these guides suggest: read manuals! and also, find typos, and make fun of them!! think, they have some guy sitting there, translating word for word in a dictonary. SOMETIMES they screw up, and it's quite comical. You also learn quitre abit by reading the manual. Then, start at the main page, and check out any reports that tell you how to do it. It's quite easy.
