View Full Version : Grrrr, BurnP6 runs fine for 12+ hours, but 3DMark2001 crashes after about 45 minutes!

I've got my 1GHz/266 running at 8.5x146, and I've ran Prime95 for 12 hours straight, Sandra for 12 hours straight, and finally BurnP6 (10 instances) for 12 hours straight, none of them had any problem and the highest my temp got was 44.2C. If I run 3DMark 2001 in a loop, system hangs or reboots the system after about 45-1 hour. Unreal Tournament ran for 8 hours without a hiccup, but Half Life has some issues after about half an hour. I tried clocking it down to 7.5x133, the normal, non-OC'd settings, and 3DMark 2001 still hung. I'm wondering if I should be looking at something else. I'm not OC'ing my video card, and I know it's getting plenty of cooling, because it's got a Y.S. Tech 12V Fan blowing right over the fan on the card itself. I also have a SBLive Value, a Diamond Fireport 40, an Intel Pro 10/100 Management Adapter, and a regular Intel 10MBit PCI card for my cable modem. 300W Power Supply that came with my Enlight case, and I'm running a Toshiba 12x IDE DVD, a Creative 52x IDE CDRom, a Teac 6x SCSI CDr, a Plextor 32x SCSI CDROM, and 2 40GB 7200rpm ATA66 Maxtor drives. Fresh install of Win2k, but I installed the 4.29 4-in-1 drivers before I read that they're a nightmare to deal with. I uninstalled them after that. I'm using the 10.80 Nvidia drivers for my Creative Geforce 2 GTS, and I'm using the latest SBLive drivers from Creative's site. I have Win2K w/ SP1 and all of the patches from their product update site.
Any ideas what I should be looking at? I may do a frsh install again and skip the 4-in-1 drivers and see if that helps any, but I was wondering if there are any other issues with my system that I should be looking at. Oh yeah, I'm running everything on an IWill KK266 1.2 revision that has the correct resistors, so supposedly it's an okay board.

The problem could be DirectX8.0. I just went through the whole deal of downloading and installing it to run 3DMark 2001, and all it did was bugger my system up. I had been avoiding it because of all the problems I has read about it. I ended up going back to DirectX7.

I don't know, if everything else that you do on your PC does not have problems I wouldn't worry about it. Does 3DMark 2001 run the benchmark OK? I think that this will only become a problem down the road in maybe a year or so when the games come out that actually push your system to the extremes that the loop test does in 3DMark 2001.

I can run Quake III for 12 hours. 3D mark for 5 hours but not even 1 second of Prime95. Its just a test , who cares?

That's interesting. I use prime95 torture to verify stability and twice now, I've had settings that ran fine but crashed running Quake2. Ya' pays 'ya money, 'ya takes 'ya chances ;-)

In my experience ,running win2k with DX8 is a crap shoot ,I have had it work on one machine ,and hose the next .it seems to depemndent on your hardware , In contrast I have had good luck with DX8 and win ME , If you have to run DX8 , I'd try to switch to ME ,If you have to run win2k ,I'd stick with DX7
