I am selling off my MSI GeForce4 Ti4200 w/64 and am looking to do a minor upgrade. Cash is limited and I do not want ATI. Never been able to get those things to work right it would seem.

Ive been looking at the ASUS GeForce4Ti4800SE w/128, which is right about what I can afford, 160/180(ish). I saw a few of the FX's for about the same price so thought Id buggers a few folks and see what would be the better choice.

My biggest question is whether or not the FX's are really worth it, last I recall reading was they werent really that much better.

Suggestions?

From my understanding, the non ultra FX cards are not worth the money. But I would actually wait for the 5600Ultra to come down in price a lil while, or save up some money. The 4200 is not a bad card, still holding in there. But that is me.

Just checked, Newegg.com has an Albatron 5600 Ultra for 195. All others are over 200. Tho i am not sure of the % performance increase, other than full DX 9 supported...

I found a site recently, someone posted it up somewhere...
http://www.accupc.com/itemDetail.jsp?pid=VAV9560TD <~ Direct link to Asus V 9560 TD GeForce FX 5600 128MB DDR TV+DVI AGP (Retail Box) $166 before shipping, which I can get for $5.
The site has some of the cards at least a few bucks cheaper then newegg.
Which is why Im pondering which to get...

The 5600ultra will not be a big improvement over the TI4200, I have both and thats my honest opinion.
Sure the FX5600 ultra supports DX9 but its just not much faster in terms of raw power.

He did say a minor upgrade, plus it will be able to hold up in most of the newer games. But I dont think there are other Nvidia cards that arent that cheap that still have some performance gain.

"Cash is limited and I do not want ATI. "

You just burned your bridges with that statement. :)

Well the cash being limited is beyond my control. Nothing I can do there.

As for ATI, well Ive had 2 of their cards in the past and had nothing but straight up troubles with them. Crashes, horrible looking images from them (yes I can claim it was the card, I could swap in a GF2 and would look fine.)
Just horrible.
I am looking at a few of the ATI cards, 95,96 and 9700Pros. Can barely find the 95's, the 96's arent supposedly much better then the 95's and the 97's are just too freakin expensive.
For cards that are supposed to be the best, how can anyone tell if they are no-where to be found, not worth it or just too expensive?

From what i have heard from many people, ATI cards are good for solitare, and games. anything outside of browsing the net i hear they have issues. But since i have no personal experience with it, the 1 thing i know i dont like is the 50 million tabs in my display properties window!!!

comeon, don't flame ati, i'm on a fx5200 and i have to say it sucks balls... don't ever get one of these,... they'll blow harder than any girl you'll proally ever know in ur life... i mean it... i get even frame rate with a gf4 460mx in dx7 games,... just don't ever get one of these,... go 5600, ultra if you got the money.... or save up for a ti4200 if you're short on the cash...

and my last card was ati... i didn't have that many issues with it, only one major lockup issue in needforspeed6 that was later solved with some kinda driver update thing, so i was kinda happy with it... it did die one of those weird "never turns on after a firegl and volt mod death" things, but i guess thats kinda my fault too... so...

a 5600 is a great card for the money, i gotta say... i'm thinking about a inno3d 5900 currently, cause i can't get anything else for even close to a decent price where i live... e.g. radeon9800 is 600usd, leadtek winfast 5900 ultra is 500usd... and i am just not in the mood to pay 600usd on a radeon, unless it gives 700 frames in ut03 or something...

edit: and for that money it'd better get me starbucks coffee when i want it too....

LMAO!! I hear yea on that one thats for sure.

Well I know Ill get kicked around some but Ive made my desicion, I will be going with the ASUS GF4Ti4200 w/128. The one that has the 4600 pcb or whatever its called. Not really a step up from what I had, but it is slightly, which is good enough. I dont really game a whole lot and I got a deal on a rig outta the classies that Ill be able to put up at my sisters house so I got a computer to use when there and I can set it up as a server for them and myself.

Thanks for all the thoughts folks, appreciated. ;)
