Hi there,

Please help! I am a newbie.

CPU: AMDK6-2+500Mhz. (2.0Vcore, 0.18Micron).

Mainboard: 5MVP3 V4.0+ AT Form Factor.
Chipset: VIA VT82C586B / VIA VT82C598MVP.
BIOS: Award full PnP, flash ROM BIOS.
Cache: 512K, 1024K.
CPU Ratio: 1.5X to 5.5X.
BUS: 60,66,75,83,95,100 mhz
SDRAM: 66/100 mhz.
Vcore: 4pins,2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,2.7,2.8,2.9,3.2,3.3,3.5v

I ONLY managed to boot up system at 300Mhz (3X100X2.0Vcore) and not 400mhz or 500mhz etc.
and my system read as 66 mhz MMX CPU.

What should I do now to boot up system running at 500mhz and overclock it to 600mhz later?

Thank you.

Koiso.

ok dude

first check that u have all the jumpers/dip switches set correctly
ie. set multiplier to 5 X and fsb to 100mhz and set the cpu core voltage to 2.0vcore or 2.1vcore if like some your mobo does not go this low then try posting up , if u still find u have 300mhz system then possibly the manual for the mobo could be wrong , does the mobo have the settings screen printed on it if so compare these with the ones in the manual and see if they are the same if not then try the ones on the mobo if u still have a problem try changing the settings ( write down the result each time so u know what u have tried ) one step at a time and see what happens * make sure u switch off and unplug each time !!!! * I've come across several mobo's on which the dips switches have been upside down and reversed from the settings shown both on the mobo and in the manual so try it and see!!!
U are very unlikely to damage the mobo by doing this
If none of the above works it may be that u will have to change your bios to the latest ones from the manufactuers website as some of the earlier bios do not work properly with the k62+ and k63+ series amd cpu's and need to be updated

good luck

I've done a bit with the K6III+ series of chips. In my experience, on FIC VA503+ motherboards, I had to upgrade the BIOS with a BETA version.

The "+" series of chips were never intended to be used in pc's, they were developed for the laptop market therefore, some motherboard manufacturers don't "officially" support them. I came across this after buying my first one and finding a similar problem as you. FIC stated in their FAQ page that there apparently was a shortage of regular K6 chips at the time, and thus they released an upgrade for the BIOS as a BETA. Currently they make no reference to this in their web site although they still carry the BIOS.

Back to your problem. I would research the motherboard manufacturer's website to see what their position is on this, maybe they have a fix for you there.

Another thing that you might try is changing the multiplier to 2X. From what I understand, when AMD developed this chip, they made the 2X multiplier read as 6X. I know this works on the FIC VA503+, and I've heard that it's true across the board.

Good luck, It should run great when you get it straightened out.

You need to let it boot up at 300 MHz and then use UART's utility to get it up to 600 MHz. Here's a link:

Thank you very much for your help.
I followed exactly all your instructions, but all I could get were :-

3 X 100 X 2.0v up to 2.4v = 300 mhz.
5 X 66 X2.0v up to 2.4v = 333 mhz.

I am running WIN ME OS, I have made real DOS mode (dosfixme zip) WIN ME patch in UART utility worked in my computer, but failed to get my CPU
(k6clkwin.exe) going any further than 3.5 fixed speed mark. and I tested with (CPU Mark99) Benchmark read as 23.9 only.

May be my motherboard 5MVP3 V4.0+ AT. manufactured by Lucky-Star (www.lucky-star.com.tw) is not compatible with AMDK6-2+ at all.

By the way, my BIOS chipset number is Award @1988 PCI/PnP 686 # 217404237 Ver1.63A.

Please advise further if any?

First, try this BIOS:

http://www.lucky-star.com.tw/pub/Bios/leb7-3-4.bin

This BIOS supports the K6-3 (non "+") chips, which the K6-2+ CPU is most similar to. But the "k6clkwin.exe" Windows utility won't work. To set your K6-2+ chip to run at a decent speed you need to a line with "k6clk 6" to your autoexec.bat file. The "k6clk 6" line calls the DOS version uart's utlitity and sets the multiplier to 6. That way the clock speed is set after the BIOS detection, but before Windows starts. Make sure you put "k6clk" in the root directory.

Your problem might be that you're using WinME. You may need to go back to Win 98 to setup this autoexec function. I dunno anything about WinME, but this is the only way to get the K6-2+ working on your mobo.
