I am a little confused, what actually is the difference between an Athlon and a Tbird?

A T-Bird is an Athlon :)
then why in the CPU database do they list overclocking for 850 tbirds and 850 Athlons?
Tchyon is correct however to get more in depth in the subject, the Athlon was the original CPU desiged for SLOT 1 usage. The newer CPUs still bear the Athlon name, but they also bear the code name Thunderbird to show that they are the newer chips in writing. Of course some Thunderbirds were made slot 1s but in general, the previous is correct.
