Just curious as to how oftenAMD's cpu's crack. My friend cracked his 4 times, using the super orb cooler and no copper spacer (the one that helps to prevent CPU cracking so it claims, not cold plate)
The copper spaces mentioned above, those neither improve nor hinder temps for the CPU right? I remember someone mentioning how cold plates actualy hurt performace, but nothing about spacers.
I've heard super orb is known for cracking CPUs
do you think 30 day OEM warrante covers crack'd CPUs? Since it could be considered user error.
My T-Bird 1 gig cracked from that damn super orb. I know or numerous people that have had CPUs cracked from the supr orb but I only recall 1 incident where anything else cracked the die. My advice, do not use an Orb, and be careful and you will be fine.
I reciently removed my pal6035.only to find the corner of the processor chiped off,I almost cried,1.2 266fsb.
However I am actually using it as I type and she is steady at 1.46.I swear to god that for no reason will I remove this processor from this system,I cant believe it actually works of after losing its corner. Now this may be different than a crack but how that is I cant tell ya !!
Oh god don't say that! I am running a 1.2 gig 266 T-Bird with a PAL 6035. Just received the CPU today and so far have it up to 1.4 ghz. I have heard of people chipping corners and still using the CPU. I would however consider myself very lucky if I were you. My 1 ghz was just a chip in the corner and it spewed cilicon out of the chip and it never saw action again. RIP. LOL. Anyway you are right, DO NOT take that CPU out of the MOBO because that might be all it takes to do it in.

so do you think I should buying those spacers w/ the holes in it, that clain to prevent crack'd CPU's?
Also, do the OEM, or manufacture 30/90 day warantee will cover the crack'd CPUs?
Actually I would just be careful. I do not have any personal experience with spacers so I am not going to say one way or another. Maybe its worth a try? Maybe it does trap heat? I am not sure. As for the warranty, it depends on where you bought the CPU and what type of warranty they give you. The best thing to do is ask them before you buy the CPU. My processor was RMAed no questions asked, however they sent me a latex anti static glove to install my new CPU like I hadn't been doing this for 10 years. It was worth getting a new CPU though.
I waz gonna order a chrome orb...they just 'look' cool. I read a lot at different forums, so I decided to check up on the different HSFs out there. I have seen at least 20 (probably more) dead processors due to the orb chipping the edge of the chip. ThermalTake should sell them things with a dam insurance policy along with it. Of course, the orb isn't the only HS to chip a processor, but it is among the highest majority. It maybe should be renamed something like the 'widow maker' or, maybe the 'cpu undertaker'.
One guy has come up with an idea that looks pretty good to me, and I may just do this myself...

The mobo's have 4 holes by the socket for mounting a HSF that does not attach to the socket. It bolts thru the mobo in these spaces provided for this. I think AMD has links to the sites that sell these...this would take the strain off of mounting the HSF to the socket, but the drawback is, it must be attached before the mobo is mounted...and if it ever needs to come off, the mobo has to be de-mounted. (unless of course the back side of the tower comes off to access the back of the mobo) I don't want one myself.
imho, you have to try REALLY hard to chip a cpu, or you're just not being careful enough. i've put some coolers on durons and tbirds on boards without much room that were real b*stards(!!!!!!) to put on, and haven't cracked a core yet. that's as in, both hands on a screw-driver forcing the clip on. just keep vertical pressure on the core and you'll be okay. as soon as you start rocking it you're asking for trouble.

Not As Much As Software!
You've been lucky Proze. I cracked mine being very careful too. Maybe my chip had problems? Not likely.
