I installed a 2.4C I got from NewEgg last week and thought it was dead. I had called NewEgg and requested an RMA. Well, it turns out that the chip is ok and I simply needed to update my BIOS.
Fast forward to today. The chip from NewEgg just arrived. Now, the right thing for me to do would be to call NewEgg, tell them that my old chip is ok, and return the new one, uopened. But man, I gotta say, I'm really itching to tear open the shrink wrap on this new chip and see how far she'll overclock.
Man, it's tough being a nice guy sometimes...

hmmm free cpu... hmmm well whats the marking on the box... it should tell you what you need to know to figure out what it will do.
Do the right thing. You know you'll feel better for it.

Newegg prides itself on being good to the customers.. Why not pride yourself and be good to newegg? :)

I think I'm gonna head over to FedEx RIGHT NOW.
Sheesh... might as well get rid of the temptation altogether.

well I have to agree with all the above....
send it back.
maybe also inclose a small "thank you" note...
you know they never get any "thanks" for all the returns they do.

Wow your a pretty honest guy, I have to admit I probably would have kept the new chip cause I would not have wanted to wait to get the old one back. I bet my wife would say you guys are good influences.
You want to talk about honesty? I found a wallet in Central Park (NYC) while I was mtn biking back when I was in college. There was about $500 cash in it and a bunch of credit cards and the guy's driver's license. Now $500 for a college kid is a lot of money. I looked at the guy's address and saw that it was only a few blocks away so I went to the guy's apt to try to return it. His doorman called him down and when he got to the lobby, he tried to blame me for stealing it!!! Then he counts his cash in front of me and then tells me I'm lucky that he doesn't call the police! What a jerk.
Sometimes it can be hard but in the end I feel better about doing the right thing and I can sleep with myself at night knowing this.

Man, what an a$$hole. That guy should have his head examined for carrying around $500 bucks in his wallet in NYC. I live here too and I would NEVER walk around with that kind of cash.
He lived on the east side (upper 50's) in one of those nice doorman apt buildings that go for like $5000/mo. I think that's pocket change to him. I was just suprised about the accusations. It still doesn't stop me from doing the right thing. I think I spent too much time in the boy scouts :D

I think you should be a nice guy and do the right thing. But I did get a bad 2.4C from Newegg. RMA'ed it back and the replacement CPU works great.

There's a lot of good people in NYC. The problem is that you just hear more about the idiots than you do about the good ones.

I'd have told him to go ahead and call police. He'd have to file a report, and he'd get nothing from you. And could you imagine the press when they find out he had a good samaritan arrested for returning his wallet?
Notably, if you ever find his wallet again, scatter his credit cards in the worst part of town, and have one of your friends return it with only the driver's liscence in it. So your friend found an empty wallet with only an ID in it... nothing wrong with that.
