im looking for an xp 1700. i need a palamino for my a7v133-c mobo (I THINK). HOW CAN I TELL A PALAMINO FROM A THOROUGHBRED within the numbers. is it dlt3 c or something. also, do i have to have a palamino for my board? which runs hotter, pally or tb? when everyone talks about the great o. c. ing of the 1700 is it both or which...... let me know please. also, where can i find one? a local shop here has a 1700 xp pally OEM for 69$$ plus tax. is that a fair price? whadya think?

DMT3C would be a pally. DLT3C is a tbred. as for whether a tbred will work in that board, im not sure. they work in some older boards, but not others. $69 is a tad high. Newegg sells 1800+ pallies for $55 and free shipping.

69 plus tax is expensive for a 1700+

if you're in a local store you can also tell the difference by looking at the core

a pally has a square core
a tbred has a smaller rectangle core

How to tell them apart (http://www.overclockers.com/tips00173/)

And the hot 1700's that you will want to look for is either a DLT 310 or DLT 319...

Check out the asus website for CPU compatability with the board, thats what i did with my A7V333 to see if it could take 333MHz bus processors, the answer was yes with a bios upgrade!!!

Sorry dude but that is the OPN code that just lists the specifications of the processor and NOT what core it has. Agreed that all Pally cores have M=1.75V default voltage, but that isn't definite as there could be a really wierd chip out there that is a Tbred with a default voltage of 1.75.

the stepping code on the bottom line is what you want to look at. Thoroughbred A and B cores are almost exactly the same to the naked eye (Pally is a nearly square core with etching on it, Tbreds don't have the steppng etched on them and are more oblong) so the difference is in the numbers.

Palomino steppings are:
AGOIA AGOGA AROIA AGKGA AGHLA and some others.

Thoroughbred A steppings have A at the end.

AJUGA (10) AIUGA (9) RUIGA (8) RIWGA (7) RIRGA (6) AIRGA (5) AIRDA (4) AIRCA (3)

And B steppings have B at the end:

AIUHB (10) AIXHB (9) AIUGB (8) JIUHB (7) AIUCB (6) JIUGB (5) JIUCB (4) AIUAB (3)

DLT3C JIUHB is the one you want to get.

EDIT there is no reason why your motherboard will not accept a Thoroughbred. Update the BIOS to the latest version though.

Sorry dude..........but have you seen a DMT3C tbred? a DLT3C pally? none have been seen or made to this date. so it is totally acurate to use it for distinction. and considering that pally cores arent made anymore, you certainly wont see a DLT3C pally.

So.....till they make a DMT3C tbred, my info is correct.

Fair enough, but core-specific information is in the stepping code and given the choice of looking at one or the other when buying I would like to see the stepping. Some DLT3C chips barely break 2Ghz

true enough....but when a NEWBIE asks about how to identify the two, i felt it was best not to try to tell him based on core steppings. both tbred A's and pallies have steppings that start with an A and end with an A.

we as experienced overclockers know exactly what to look for, thats why i almost hit the floor when i found a retail 1700+ 0310 WPMW at a local compter store.

if its posssible to perceive tone from typed script the word NEWBIE seems somewhat harsh. but thank u everyone for ur input. just didnt want to buy before asking advice from those more experienced.

ps, i go back to the days of apple II' s and apple IIe's in schoool and a commodore vic 20 at home. WHOS THE NEWB NOW?, SON!

LOL , THANKS AGAIN GUYS! great site , full of info, very helpful.

Don't sweat the word newbie...everyone starts somewhere...even with the new hardware ;)...and most think that since you have no stars...BTW - I still have my commodore vic 20 ;)...along with my old cyrix's and my old TI 386/486...gotta to love those older systems :D

not being harsh to you. just trying to make a point to the other guy about why i told you to use the OPN #'s rather than steppings. using the OPN # (DMT3C, DLT3C) creates less confussion than steppings, because there are so many steppings.

no harm no foul. it really is a great forum for info. one more question if i can. what is the model 6 and model 8 ive seen elsewhere. ie... athlon 1700 model 6 is that also pally and tb references?
