My cousin is staying over for the summer, and he uses my moms pc downstairs to play certain games. We wanted to try to play together, but the problem is we cant connect using warcraft 3 over the router. We try local area network, but it just dosent work, we dont see the game. Is this due to the routers firewall? is there a way I can get around this. This router is a linksys BESFR4 or something like that. Maybe I should just get a switch and crap this router out?

Your router should only be blocking traffic coming from the internet, not on your internal network. If either of you are running windows xp you may want to check if you have xp's firewall enable.

Yeah we checked xp's firewall, got rid of that, still nothing. I have heard people complain about this before, but idk why this happened.

Do both of you have the same game version?

I would start by getting the ip addresses on each computer, then try to ping each other.

If this is a new model (as it appears from the Linksys page, although the only thing close to what you said that I could find was the BEFSR41), then the first thing you should check are the settings of the router. Open Internet Explorer and type in your router's IP address. The default is probably 192.168.1.1, so if you didn't change it, enter that in the address bar like http://192.168.1.1 and hit enter. It will ask you for a user name and password. Unless you changed it, the default username is blank and the default password is "admin". Then look around in the settings. There should be stuff in there about games and things. You can find the manuals online (if you've thrown them away) here (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=20) .

Hope that helps

EDIT: No matter if this information is helpful or not, you need to change the user name and password from the defaults for security. If you're the one that fixes computers, you pick it (write it down if you're forgetful), if not, tell the person that does your networking bits to set one up.

Well im going to try to ping our computers, I pinged my own and it worked, I guess this still isnt going to work anyway, we always try it.

Pinging your computers doesn't guarantee they'll work to game. A ping just shows that the computer is there. You need to have the right ports open and what not.

Can you see the other's computer in Network Neighborhood?

I get an error when I try to detect my workgroup or whatever that option is in my network places.

There is a port you have to forward to both IP's. Yes forward the same port that is how me and my bro used to play online with WC3. I can't remember what the port is though:( Good luck:D

Edit: get your network so you can see each other first then open the port.

We have port 6112 open, we dont wanna play on the internet since we both have the same cd key (maybe thats the problem?) Idk how to get to see the network, do I have to set up a microsoft network (heard this isnt good)

You'll want to delete that part about the CD key as soon as possible. That's not appropriate discussion matter.

You need to get the computers to talk to each other first.

Make sure they're both on the same workgroup (workgroup or home or something like that). Give each computer a name. While sharing a hard drive is not required to be visable on the network, you might try it.

Fixed it, I didnt realize my virus scanner had a built in firewall. I kinda just thought of that since I couldnt host games on bnet either, then I tried lan and it worked.

I believe the CD Keys in Blizzard games (Starcraft/Brood Wars/WC3) are only in place to permit ONE account to be online per CD Key). They don't care if you use a CD Key for every install you do - to allow the full version to be on more than one computer at a time.

But sharing the same CD Key shouldn't hinder LAN games. Or at least it hand't in the past with blizzard games.

i know that there are some games that have a "lan multiplayer only" install option...

anywho, glad it worked out for ya... :)
