A friend of mine bought a p///-s 1.4gb Tualitin processor for an upgrade to his wifes compaq 933. He's asked me to migrate the entire system to a new case, and I'm not that familiar with what the differences are with those tualitins -vs- a normal fc-pga p/// processor. The new chip even came with a socket adaptor, but the procesor fits into the standard 370 pin socket. So I'm looking for some advice as to what differences there are between the two and if it fits in the socket, should the mobo be able to run it without the adaptor.

My biggest problem with not using the adaptor is that the mobo has a huge capacitor right next to the socket and the adaptor won't fit with that in the way. So if someone with a little more knowledge of these older systems could help me out here, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance:cool:

the adapter changes the vid pins to correct ones... some motherboards are universal some aren't. its always best to try with the adapter first rather than face the 2+ volts the different pin out will get you for a vcore.

Does the adapter say "Powerleap" on it? I'm pretty sure that Compaq isn't compatible with Tualatin CPU's so an adapter like that is needed.

If it is a Powerleap, then you should check their website to see if works with that Compaq MB/PC.

the 933 is the old style Coppermine chips. that socket is NOT compatible with the tualitin core chips. SOME motherboards will 'tolerate' an adapter for the tualitin chips. Others will not. I'm guessing just from the fact its a 'Compaq' that board will not deal with it well. In any case, do NOT attempt to install the 1.4 straight into the socket370. . you WILL risk DAMAGE of the chip and mo board. . . . NO adapter?? then dont try it!! . . IF by change the adpater works. the mo board 'should' be able to be migrated. (I hate Compaq). . lol (j/k)

Yeah, I hate Compaq too!!! Thanks for the help guys. It looks bleak for this current setup then, I'm going to have to talk him into changing out the mobo. Bad for him, good for me:)

The only thing holding me back from getting the adapter to work is a huge capacitor mounted right next to the socket, which is where the adapter needs to hang over to work. So the adapter is definitely a no-go in that mobo.

Ok all, got another question for the masses here. I've got an old Abit VH6-T motherboard laying in the basement that dates back to those days, was my first real overclocking mobo for p/// chips. I'm reading the manual on Abits site now, and apparently it has the Via chipset in it, but states that it supports fc-pga2 processors. I know this tualitin is that kind of chip, but the manual doesn't specify anything about tualitins in it. Could someone look at this manual and gimme their opinion on compatibility? here's (ftp://ftp.abit.com.tw/pub/download/manual/english/vh6t.pdf) a link to the manual, it's in pdf format. Beware any 56kers, it's 84 pages long. As far as I can tell, I believe it is compatible, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about this older stuff to know. Thanx!!! :cool:

just because a cpu is FC-PGA2 doesn't mean it is a tualatin.
later coppermine cpu's were FC-PGA2.
all that means is they were FC-PGA chips with IHS's.

having said that, the VH6-T will run tualatins.
it uses the VT82C694T chipset. also known as the apollo pro 133T, which is the chipset you need for definite tualatin support.
you may need the latest bios update for it to correctly recognise the cpu, but even without it, it should still be able to run it just fine.

Cool, thanks Looktall, that's what I was looking for. I knew that just because it stated fc-pga2 that it didn't mean that it would support it, that's why I was asking. I'm not that much of a Intel buff to know these things. I do know though, that I always did like that motherboard. Thanks again. :)
