Isn't the XP3200 the last socket A cpu?

im not sure i think it might be the 3200+ or they might bring out the 3400+
I think the 3200 will be the last PR rating, but the Thorton will be the last socket A core architecture released.

Is there any real difference between the Thorton and today's Barton?
IT will be a Barton with half of the L2 cache disabled.

They have room to scale at least two more: Athlon XP 3400+ and Athlon XP 3600+.
Unless we hear something in the next couple of weeks, the earliest you may see them is Q4 2003, if at all.
Maybe they would look at where the market stands after Hammers start to sell so look for rumors in October.

Yeah, I think they'll come out with at least a 3400. The Thornton is basically a Barton with half the cache disabled, so basically the same performance as a T-Bred. Though maybe you could enable that cache and get a Barton for cheap. Similar to the 9500np mod perhaps.

According to this link (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=9966), the socket A chips should last a little while longer. A 25% boost in transistor speed would translate to the last socket a chip running at ~2.8GHz

Well I wish that they would stay the same as they were when the Palomino was first released. Then they were even better than what it was rated as..

You would as a consumer but you wouldn't as an AMD executive since that would be commercial suicide...

NOW??
I always thought they were out of hand. Stupid idea that never should have been repeated. If you think those are bad, try to figure out the Opetron numbers, I'm still working on that one.
And when Athlon 64 comes out, don't expect them to disgard the PR system, it's just going to get even more out of line, as prelim tests have already showed the 64 bit procs to be hopelessly overrated.

So you would make a decision to drop PR ratings if you were in charge knowing full well what the consequences would be in a market were vast majority of consumers don't know what a MHz is?
Your decision would cause AMD to loose more $ that it's already loosing.
No you would not make such a decision after looking into why it was made in the first place. Such a decision would destroy AMD.
Changes in the PR system are a different story...
