Ok I just now got my computer running
I installed windows 98 and everything was fine untill I noticed that windows thought my hd was only 1.99 gigs
my bios says its 30 gigs wich it is.......
I have a westerdigital 30 gig HD
1.2 ghz tbird cpu
a KA-266-r mb and 128 of ram 2100
what should I do?
reformat the HD and reinstall win98?
or is there something else in the bios that I have to play with?
the win98 cd came with my Dell computer
Warlord2,
isn't the very first thing FDISK asks is something like - yada yada yada, "do you wish to enable this feature" (refering to HDs greater than 2 gig)?
did you say yes?

Boot to dos use fdisk to look at your partition info and see if all of the space on the drive is used. I had A friend who let a local shop set his computer up and they only put a 2 gig partition on an 8 gig drive and he asked me to find out why it didn't have any room left.

You want to say to enable LBA mode. If you say no then it partitions the drive using FAT16 which limits it to 2gb, you need to have a FAT32 boot disk for windows and make sure you say yes to question asked if you want to enable it.
Create your partition stating create primary partition and say yes to make maximum size available.
If you still have no luck make sure everything is setup ok in the bios and try to get hold of a copy of Partition Magic, that will help create your partitions in the best possible way, excellent piece of software.
If you still have problems let us know.
Hope this helps.

The answer to the question about accessing drives larger then 2gig is yes. A 30gig harddisk is calculated by the company as 30 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 or 30000000000 bytes but windows and dos use a factor of 1024 thus 30000000000/1024/1024/1024 or 28610meg or 27.94 gig. Check logical drives on the harddisk to make sure you have allocated all of the drive
xtra note: on swome HDDs, like the Seagate Barracuda, yoiu can limit the HDD to show only the 1st 2gigs. you might want to check the jumper is just master/slave/whatever and not limited to 2 gig
