Ok guys, heres my deal. I WAS using win 98, with my 256 stick of ram, no problem, playing warcraft 2 at 1600x1200 all AA ans ansio all the way up, would not stuter at all.

I Upgraded to XP, and now it stutters BAD in "big" (18-14 units) battles. Im not sure thats wrong, ive got cat 3.6, and im using DX 9, all my mobo dirvers are installed, any ideas guys?

warcraft 2? is that a typo? I was playing warcraft 3 with the system in my sig but only 256 mb ram and it was fine (although I didnt crank up AA and AF and it was at 1024x768)

My only guess is that you need more ram so check ram usage in game. Still, 256 mb should be fine..

256 is low for winxp. if you are going to run winxp you should think about getting at least 512. Until you can do that there is alot of things you can do to free up some ram.

Winxp runs a ton of services most of wich you prob dont even need. You should also turn off themes, disk indexing, and any kind of fancy window effects. All the automatic updating stuff takes up memory too. They dont take up much alone, but when you have 10 or more stupid things set on automatic update it adds up.

If you want to run the minimal crap that windows xp has it will take a good hour to find and shut everything off. Yes, there is that much useless crap.

I think that winXP is using over 120MB from a clean install, which is what makes me think that 256 is just not enough.

If it's WC2 and not WC3 maybe you could try to run it in Win98 mode? You can set older games to run in diffrent modes then XP. Just right click on the icon and go to compatability. I do agree that you need more then 256mgs to run XP well. But maybe running it in 98 mode might help you out....... can't hurt to try.

While 256 mb is not the optimal amount of memory, it is certainly enough to play games like warcraft3 (and especially war2). In fact, 256mb is the recommended amount of memory for war3 (128 required). I had war3 and stacraft open simultaneously while having several IE windows open with 256mb ram no prob (XP pro, with default services). Its true XP takes up over 100mb right away but it also writes much of it on the page file so that shouldnt really matter.

i'm not sure which services you can shut off... i'd like to hear which ones you don't need as a home user from other posters. But you can control the services by going to:

right click my computer>manage>services and applications

right click on the services and go to properties. if you disable them they never turn on, and if you put them on automatic they'll turn on whenever windows wants them to.
