View Full Version : Jumping ship from Intel to AMD I need some advice!!
Ok Im jumping ship from intel over to Athlon, at least for a few months.
Im trying to decide on which Athlon CPU to buy.
Im trying to decide between the Athlon 1.3 (13x100 CPU) 200mhz fsb or the 1.33(10x133 CPU) 266fsb.
I don't know which one will be better for overclocking. Im an I'm an Intel girl and if this was an Intel chip I would say grab the 13x100 chip as this gives you more room to move up the fsb. However, this is an AMD chip and the multiplier is unlocked so the 1.33 gives you more room to go on the multiplier.
I need to make a decision by tommorow morning. I need some good suggestions and explanations as to why you would go one way or the other.
I also would like a recommened for a good DDR overclocking board for this chip..
thanks
Well, at this moment...I most definately would go with the 1.33 Tbird @ 266. It comes unlocked...some of the 200s did, but not all. In recent months the AMD processors were coming from the Austin Texas plant, and have the aluminum core. These run considerably hotter, and do not clock as well as their copper core counterparts. No word is out right now (thats been confirmed) that the 1.33 266 Tbirds are made in Dresden Germany (where the copper core cpu's are made), but seems likely. One guy has already broken 2 gig with the 1.33 Tbird on a highly modded Asus mobo...running at something like 188 fsb. The Palamino should be out by about September, and is supposed to be an overclocker from h*ll.
About the boards designed for DDR ram, it seems that many are having problems setting it up...so, I don't know what to say here for you. You can go to Amdmb forum and read there...they have a section for each of the popular AMD mobos. I am leaning towards the Iwill KK266-R soon, but the DDR version is the KA266 or 266-R...some have had great success with it, some have pulled their hair out...
This forum is slow!!!... the server has problems, but if you can wait out the slow page loading, you may find some answers here.

MsNath,
If I had your setup, I would get a second P3 700E and run SMP. Otherwise a 1.2 gig C series AXIA chip.
I would go with the 266 chip as was stated it comes unlocked. If I didn't already have 2 1000\ 200 chips that is what I would buy.As far as boards I have got an Abit KT7A-raid and KT7-raid. I am very pleased with them. I prefer the KT7A-raid.It is an excelent o/cer.Memory go for the crucil pc133 you can get 150 out of it. Once you go to AMD I don't think you will go back to intel. Hope this helps.
Hi I own the 1.2 266fsb And my advice is get THE 266fsb.Wether you go 1 gig or 1.33.I know you can appricieat the faster the fsb the faster the computer.
I run the Abit KT7A and am very very happy with it,also use the alpha 6035 heat sink.
My experence so far has been a top stable setting of 1.46.However the alpha struggles with the temps after a long time of intense apps.I backed my chip down untill I water cool.
Not having a high-buck CPU, I say this speculatively:
It would seem to me that a core spec'd for 13x100 is a higher quality than one that is only spec'd at , say 12x108. I assume that is why the 200 CPUs cost more than the 266 ones.
I'm not sure which represents the greatest challenge in fabrication and reliability. One that has a faster ALU & FPU, or one that has a faster Interface to the outside world.
Again, I don't design CPUs for a living, this is just an invitation for discussion and possibly enlightenment.
