View Full Version : Why I am glad I didn't wait for Palomino

I just got back from a snowboarding trip in Colorado and all this news re: Palomino made me feel good and kinda cheated at the same time.....

Man, after reading all that crap on the front page, I feel so unbelievably vindicated...... I was running a K62 500 system about a month and a half ago and thought that it would hold me over untl Palo and DDR. ( wound up buying a KT7A-R and a Duron in mid-february)

Initial impression of KT266: Horrid. This was the DDR chipset I was banking on. I was counting on Via coming through in a big way like they did with KT133A. Simply not so.

And then there's the chip issue - judging by all the news on the front page and elsewhere, Palomino is nowhere near ready for market. AMD is pulling Intel-like manuevers in constantly delaying this chip, which means there must be some huge problem with Palo's design, they're obviously hitting the proverbial wall at some point. Like articles on the front page mentioned, whether it's heat issues or voltage issues, SOMETHING is holding Palo in the stable for a while longer.

Is this the beginning of the end for AMD? Or is it just growing pains? I am a firm AMD supporter - I think they make the best CPU's for consumer PC's, bang-for-the-buck wise and performance-wise. My Duron system, after several socket 7 systems (thumbs way down), is the most overclockable and most stable setup I have ever run. I was gone for six days in Winter Park and had folding@home running the entire time. No one even around in my apartment in case of bad things happening. AMD has certainly given me reason to stick with them the past month to year or so. What's next for them? This whole horsey thing is not helping their case for becoming a serious Intel competitor in some of the other markets.

Just a rant. Thanks for the time & space.

Good post! I'm taking a trip home to my parent's house at the end of april and I was going to wait for palomino for after I return, but it's looking more and more like I'll be purchasing a highend T-Bird instead.

I just won't be able to wait any longer and 1.2GHz T-Birds will be dirt cheap by then. Perhaps I'll even go higher.
