View Full Version : HL2 TrapTown Video... WOW

About a week ago I downloaded three of the videos, didn't think much about 'em so I stopped. Today I downloaded trap_town.... holy cow. Just about every freaking thing in the game will be animated/interactive. It's going to be totally different. Most games that are semi interactive, you end up trying to interact w/ thing that don't do a damn thing. Maybe in this game there won't be any of those static objects.

can i pick up a table?
I always wanted a game where you could be a person and just live in a world where everything was interactive.. meaning you can do whatever to anything. Like living a real life inside a game. But of course that would be WAAAY too complicated to play.. or even program. Vice City gave a taste of that.
I hope Half-Life 2 is at least a 3dshooter in that kind of scenerio. that would be so crazy! :)

My friend said it best, "I want a game that has no limits, I want to be able to walk into the middle of a park, and start digging up dead bodies, and look at other people watching me in horror"
Seriously I think one day that will be the new genre, just like mmorpg is the current big one, someday we will have something like that :)

OMG i watched it and YOU CAN PICK UP A TABLE. Its so cool but i really doubt everything in the game will be as interactive as that level.

Well, that was impressive. I have never seen this amount of manipulability in a game. It seems as if all physical objects are game. Im glad I upgraded my cpu.

If you've ever read enders game. Do you remember the game he plays on his desk in his room from time to time? The one where he kills that giant.... It's as if its an ever changing game with no limits. He could do whatever he wanted and explore whatever he wanted at any time. It was ongoing.
I want to play that game.

Yeah I noticed that, but at least this is a better quality version of it. Also a good way to tell if your pc will run this game well or not. It lags the crap out of my friends pc, but runs nicely on mine.
They've certainly taken their time coding this engine. It does look very good.
oh man i just cant wait for this game to be released, im preparing myself for weeks on end of trappig myself in my room glued to the monitor, all i need is a like a few hundred litres of pop and bags of crisps :)
Have you guys seen the new Bugbait video? WOW is all I can say! This one was released just this past Friday I believe. Fast downloads from 3dgamers too!

ya i owe Oni a big time for introducing me to filemirrors, the movie runs perfectly fine on my PC but i don't think so that have anything to do with how the game will actually perform on a end user's pc
Yes the game engine looks AWESOME can't wait to get my hands on this one :)

oohhhhh i'm downloading bugbait right now, and that traptown was just awesome.....I want that thing in real life! I'm assuming though that you can't toss very heavy stuff....or else I'd be using it on enemies all the time, lol.

Ok, I downloaded bugbait and dock. But they both come up w/ an illegal opperation like 30sec threw. The computer I use to download everythin (and I'm trying to play these on) has a radeon 8500se and Windows 98SE. I'm downloading DX9.0b but I doubt that will help. WHAT'S WRONG?!

two words: GRAVITY GUN!!! really, there's supposed to be a gravity gun that allows you you pick up heavy object and throw them around!!! w00t
d00d i still think the traptown is still the best hehe... I just love how the AI acts in the beginning.. kinda unexpected.
In a way I was very impressed by the traptown video and in another way I was not.
Yes the stuff is interactive. Yes its above and beyond what has been done before but if you think about what the player does in the video its all kind of scripted into the level. Just like the non descript exploding barrels that happen to be sitting right next to where a guy shooting at you is in Vice City. So its not like the player is thinking up all these great ways to kill the enemies on the spot and executing them within the game. There seems to be one best way to go about the level.
I'm not saying its not cool its just not the wildly extensible setup some of you guys are hoping for. Really cool stuff (like the girder swinging on the wires) isn't going to happen unless the developers intended it to happen.

well everytthing, and i mean everything is affected by the physics engine

In the tunnels video, couple things didnt seem to act correctly though.
The wooden grates just blew up when the flying blades went through them, although mabye they are going for that.
Also, when gordon knocked the first blade into a wooden book shelf, it just kinda scratched it and blew the shelves around.
Mabye its just me, but those two things just felt off from all the other amazing stuff.

WOW!
Now i just hope it is as good as it looks in these videos, because i rember a game way back called black and white, that looked awsome but once released was totally different than the videos they released before hand. I hope HL2 isnt like this.
HL2 looks awsome from these videos. My advice try not to get to pumped up because if its not what you expected than youll regret the wait and playing.... my 2cents...
BUT SOMETIMES I JUST CANT hELP IT, I WANNA PLAY IT SO BAD! damn urges :P

From what i recall the physics engine is to be as close to real world as possile. No tossing boats/cars around like superman.

I've watched all 6 and traptown is the best. True that most of this stuff could've been done in other games if they were scripted, but they are not, which i thing is better on programmers because they dont have to bother with getting it all right.
Wouldn't it also make it easier on modders?

Cheat codes? :D
Anywho, it looks like they spent time with this engine compared to the first one, im really impressed with that type of gameplay and graphics. I always wanted to block a frikin door so i dont get killed from behind. Thought it was halarious when Gordon made the 'I' beams swing down and plow through everyone :D  :p

yea..i don't doubt the developers already thought of that and probably implemented it into the game like ut2k3 does some of their mutations.
lol you guys convinced me to DL the 200mb video gah!
lol
it was ****ing awesome i must say
damn thats cool

Yeah, the only two thing that REALLY didn't seem right were:
A) in trap town when Gorden is breaking the boards off of the door upstairs. They broke before he hit them... like right when he started to swing his crowbar... they split.
B) in tunnels where he just shot at a wooden crate and it just shatterd.
But of course the game won't be out 'till october, and from the looks of it they're set on getting everything RIGHT.

dude, just go to filemirrors.com
and find a file from the e3 presentation, its around 211 mb , zipped , with 6 videos in it , really good stuff
Big Red Downloaded the 500meg zipped file while we were at CampAOA. (took a freaking hour!!!) and we watch it over there.
I was HIGHLY impressed.

As long as it wasn't camp "AOL" ;)
But seriously, is the 500Meg file just more E3 presentations stuff or some new stuff we didn't see yet?
bsspewer
08-10-03, 02:16 PM
the 500 meg file is the actual E3 presentation recorded live. The sound and video isn't too great, but it wasn't recorded on a personal video camera. You also get to hear what the developers said about the game and see more stuff that's not in the individual videos

Ich möchte, nein, Ich will
Pretty awsome game Looks to be a must have. What I like best is that it was made for the PC and not a copy like GTAIII is *shutters*, yuck that game was horrable, not the game it self but the time and "effort" that went into it. You need a 2GHz processor just to get decent frame rates as well as a 64MB card :o
