I Oc my K7-800 to 1080 (108 x 10),it ran good @ 1050 but i wasnt satisfied and pushed it.
Trying to lower the L2 multiplier some how damaged it. Now i on the market for a new processor.I still have my mobo, heatsink, and GFD for the K7. Does anyone know where i can find a cheap K7 900 -1000, or am i just playing with dinosaurs? Should i upgrade to the newer T-bird and Durons?
Please advise.

>Should I upgrade<

That depends on what you're looking to do. If you're on a budget and are satisfied with the performance you have now, then the slot A would be adequate. Slot A type proccesors are still readily avaialable.

But if you're looking for an upgrade path for the near future, then obviously you should look into the new motherboard etc.....

Well i've seem to salvage some of the processor. I'm back up on the 800 w/o OC , but my performance has lessened.
I'm a newbie at OC, do the new T-birds and Durons out-perform the true K7 (w/ 512 L2 cache) with their fixed 256 L2's(T-bird's), cause i'm still looking to upgrade, ALWAYS!!!!
I figure i can get a K7-900 and go to 1200 or close with my system as is:
Abit ka7 mobo
768 mb pc-133 sdram
TD2 GFD
Alpha P-7125 heatsink w/ many other fans
2-Maxtor ata/66 7200 rpm harddrives 1-30, 1-15
Please help i'm a newbie.

Yes the new chips are faster. The cache may not be quite as big but it runs at full speed which more then makes up for the lost size. Plus with some of the latest you have a shot at 1.5 gig!

I am testing a 1.2 gig tbird @ 1440 now with a fop38 and am putting the final touches on a supercooling system for it today. I should have it up and running in a few hours :)

I've got to agree with Ken.
The newer T-BIRDS and DURONS are the next in the line of progression. I think that I would wait until they get the cost / performance issues with the DDR straightened out before I would take the next step, especially since your current system dosen't sound too shabby.
Currently I've seen slot A 900/950MHz ATHLONS and T-BIRDS in the $160.00/180.00 range about $5.00 less than the socket A chips.

Some people are already dumping Slot-A, so if you look around good enough, you might get one very cheap. Where are you? In US, you could try http://www.pricewatch.com . To bad I am in europe, in the netherlands we use elcheapo ( http://elcheapo.nl/ ). If I were you, wait for a good palomino board at the end of this year, as there are no real mobo's around which are officially guaranteed for them. Besides VIA hasn't shown up with their DDR solution yet. Hey, Slot-A isn't so bad after all !? :)

Rumor is socket A, they're supposed to keep it around for a while yet.
AMD dumped the slot A a while ago.

Thanks for all the advice. I've decided to go ahead and and get another K7 (512 L2), but at 900. Thanks to MR.MURPHY, i found a K7900 @ http://www.accubyte.com/home.htm for 130.00 + shipping.
This is just the begining for me. I'M HOOKED ON OC, its a bad thing.
But as i've read here somewhere " if at first you don't succeed, cover up all evidence that you tried", i like that one!LOL!
SEE YOU ALL SOON, I'LL LET YOU GUYS KNOW HOW THE 900 WENT.
